I've been doing some soul-searching regarding my attitudes towards food

If you are one of the few people who read my posts, you will know that I have always been skeptical of the organic/natural food movement, chemophobia, alternative medicine etc. I have ridiculed some posters who have said that natural is better than synthetic etc. But, I have been reading more and the worm is turning in my head. I was digging into some articles for my class and found that Coke is adding a chemical 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione to many of its products. It is not even listed in its ingredients. A few months ago, the chemical azodicarbonamide was banned by Subway. 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione is 33x as toxic as azodicarbonamide. 33x!! It has an LD50 value of 192 mg/kg, whereas azodicarbonamide has an LD50 of 6400 mg/kg. I am ashamed that I have blindly supported the food industry that brazenly adds these poisons in our food. The more I read about these additives, the more I dislike them. As a student of science, I am willing and open to looking at data to change my mind and this exactly what is happening to me. I protested when SubWay was forced to remove azodicarbonamide just because some whackos felt that it was bad just because you couldn't pronounce it. I laughed when someone here posted that real food should not have ingredients that only an organic chemist can pronounce. But the joke's on me. I think it is time to take a long hard look at these chemicals and consider banning them before it is too late. Soon a petition will come out banning the addition of 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione. Sign it and tell your friends to sign it too.

No takers? This is a real problem, guys. Much as I support GMO technology and criticize the hippy organic lobby, this particular toxin needs a much closer look. I am surprised that no one here is concerned (yoda, Ram?)

sounds Greek to me
A few months ago, SubWay was forced by some activist gropus to remove an ingredient named azodicarbonamide from their bread dough. The logic was that it is also used in yoga mats and so is toxic. This other compound that I mentioned above -- 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione is 33x as toxic as azodicarbonamide. It is added to Coke, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper etc. But no one has caught on to it yet. I am just bringing awareness about it. Dangerous $h#*.

I've been a supporter of natural food for a long time now as you know. I don't have your scientific expertise in the area to back my decision on logical and scientific grounds. My view on food and eating habits is very unstructured and vague, but there are a few broad ideas I base my choices around: 1. Adopt traditional meals of societies which have existed for hundreds of years. Little chance of going wrong with daal, chawal, roti, sushi, stir fry etc. when these things have existed in tropical and semi tropical climates for hundreds of years and don't contradict any well established science. I think my genetic makeup is not equipped to handle beer, cheese, sausages, and burgers on a daily basis. No scientific proof attached. 2. Given the small percentage of income I spend on food (and most people here living in the US), I do not feel compelled to save an extra $200-250 per month for our household expenditure to switch from natural/organic food. 3. I am not so concerned about the vegetarian foods, but am really paranoid about hormones being injected into animals. These are probably things my body does not need on a daily basis else it would be producing them on its own. 4. Occasionally indulge in pretty much anything, because every poison has its lethal dose and the key is to stay under that radar. I am not technically qualified to respond to your potential change of track, so just blurted out my food preferences and reasons, which I am sure I have done before as well.

I very rarely drink sodas......or anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup........my body instantly rejects anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup and I immediately start coughing.......it gets worse during the winter......Corn Syrup is a little less punishing....I can eat a twix bar and be ok.....the two things are different...... http://highfructosehigh.com/corn-syrup-vs-high-fructose-corn-syrup-vs-corn-sugar/

Stop thinking about it as else you will go crazy. It's smart to observe these things and be informed but to stress about it and taking sides doesn't really help in day to day life. I know people who have taken this to extreme and are always scared that something they are eating is not as natural as it could be. I know people who smoke organic Ciggirates. Relax and enjoy life, a soda 2-3 times a week or a McDonald's breakfast once a month or a whopper once a fortnight won't kill you.

Outy, I get your points. I disagree with most of it, but I get them. jalebi, you must worry more about 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione than HFCS.

sounds like another "PSPO" to me!! remember the old orient fan advt that said, "is mein PSPO" hai! ". Just because a chemical has a long name that no one can remember or pronounce, does not mean that it is bad for you. I could be bad, neutral or good for the body; unless there is documented proof, how does it matter. BTW, there is research showing that eating tomatoes can cause you cancer.

Health-food advocates such as Michael Pollan suggest: "If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it." And there is something to be said for that, isn't there. He is a food expert who writes for the NYT and has excellent credibility in the nutrition circles. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89876927 And it is that principle by which the toxic chemical azodicarbonamide was banned by Subway. This chemical 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione is 33x as toxic. Plus more people drink coke and coffee than eat Subway.

Don't you get tired of writing this over and over again? Or is it saved for copy paste?

I smell the thread is a joke/sarcasm? :dontknow: Why would cricaddict name the chemical so many times Edit: HAHAHAHA. I knew it. It is caffeine motherlovers.
What? Are you sure? Seriously, though, I am trying to point out how complex plant chemistry is. The chemicals they make may be are much more complex and may be much more toxic than man-made chemicals. We so easily accept foods and additives that our ancestors were using without knowing their real structure or chemistry and thus gave them easily pronouncable names. If caffeine were discovered today, the food "experts" would be all over it and not allow it to enter our food supply. The damn thing is 33x (yes I am repeating it a 100 times so we can see the point here) as toxic as azodicarbonamide, which Subway was forced to abandon because of a stupid online petition. But, no one is questioning caffeine being added to everything. Why? Because it was made by a plant? Because we are so familiar with it? Because we discovered coffee a 1000 years ago when humans were too stupid to ask any questions about its toxicity? Because it is easy to pronounce caffeine, but not azodi$$%$#!%$? If we had been using azodi!$#@$#@$# for a 100 years with the name breadbuddy because we didn't know what that $___ h ___ I ___ T was, may be no one would have raised any objections? Is that a good way to make decisions about what we eat when there are real objective tests done to test for toxicity? We need to get over the "natural is better," "simple pronunciation is better" fallacy. We need to get over the source of chemicals and focus on the chemicals themselves. The real question is not "how was this made?" Rather it should be : "Is this s_ _ t toxic as measured by objective biochemical means?"

I can copy paste it from my OP :-)!! I can't remember it beyond the "1,3,7" even when I have had 3 cups of coffee!!

What about when you drink Indian sodas?

I wholeheartedly concur with this. People who mostly eat home cooked food, can try everything in proportion.
