Kumar Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 (Before I continue with this, I am specifically just commenting on his batting) Since Kallis retiring from international cricket this year, on various websites,forums and even by many cricket pundits, I have seen Kallis come from a very underrated batsmen in the mid 00's to arguably by many people's opinions as a great if not greater batsmen than the likes of ponting and tendulkar. What your opinion on this folks, as quite frankly after hearing so much on Kallis recently, I just feel he has been grossly over hyped that in my opinion he should be labelled as one of the most overrated batsmen given how much praise he gets?

Most teams consider Kallis as a real threat just like a Lara or a Sachin or a Ponting when playing against the respective teams but the thing is they dont fear or have sleepless nights like they do with the other three mentioned above. And yes he is one of the greatest batsmen in test cricket!

gazza Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 He's a giant of the game, one of the best test and ODI bats and one of the best all rounders to, wouldn't put him on the Lara, tendulkar or ponting level as a bat though.

Give me a chunk span of period where he was out of touch apart from the last 1 year? Also, in that tour to Pak where he notched 3 tons. Not the flat pitch series in UAE but in Pakistan. Match winning 2 tons in the same game. I don't remember that year, it was before the '07 WC.

He had one of the simplest yet one of the best effective technique in Tests.

Purely as a batsman I dont think hes in that league,but as an AR hes probably the best ever:hatsoff:

Not in the league of this guys but was easily an awesome batsman and I love watching him bat unlike Smith.
MCcricket Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 If I was given a choice as a cricket lover which cricketer I would love to be born as surely would be Kallis as he could do it all, fantastic bowler who could rattle the best n had skills to match and as a batter he was very tough to get out n maybe did not have the range of strokes of a Richard , Lara or Sachin but surely as good in test as numbers also don't lie,not a maverick or exciting bat though but surely not over rated for me Pointing was as he could not play spin to save his life.
Muloghonto Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 kallis, Ponting and Dravid, for me, would never be as good as Tendulkar and Lara the batsmen. If you asked me, in the last 30 years i've been keenly following cricket, who are fit the bill of 'great batsmen' truely, it woudl be Gavaskar, Viv, Tendulkar, Steve Waugh and Lara. At their peaks, they not only dominated/atleast never failed badly against anyone they played, they also did it on juicy pitches against much better bowling attacks. Kallis, Dravid and Ponting all had their purple patch and put up the numbers but they failed miserably against a great bowling attack or two and didnt face as much quality bowling attacks like Lara, Tendulkar and Waugh. Kallis IIRC, till Wasim,Waqar,McGrath, Warne retired, averaged under 40 against OZ and Pakistan. Lara, Tendulkar- they had a bad series here and there (especially Lara) but they did beat the snot out of the best bowling attacks back then (lara averaged 50+ vs OZ and high 40s against Pak in the 2W days, Tendy averaged high 50+ and low 40s+ vs these two). Dravid had a horrid time in OZ in 99 and except for 2001 at home, he never truely got the measure of McWarne attack. Ponting, well he bats like Sir Jaddu in tests when in India- yes, he was Harby's bunny but he also crapped his pants at Kumble on a duster as well. Go down the list of batsmen and barring Viv, Sunny,Lara, Tendy and Waugh, i don't think there is any batsman who hasn't had a consistently poor time against one or more great bowling attacks they've faced. Miandad was hopeless against the Windies till the late 80s (when their bowling declined a bit. Garner retired, Marshall lost a bit of pace, Holding was gone, Walsh hadn't fully developed yet and Ambrose-Bishop were not there yet either), Border was ordinary in England and hopeless in West Indies, Jayawardene cant bat well outside the subcontinent and even Sanga is no great shakes overseas despite facing the weakest crop of fast bowling attack in the category. Don't get me wrong- Kallis is an ATG batsman. So are Dravid, Ponting, etc. They would walk into any team that's been fielded from any era and really, thats what makes one an ATG. But IMO, they do not really belong in an Alltime fantasy XI or XV squad on the basis of their batting. Kallis obviously does belong in an alltime XI discussion due to his allround abilities, but IMO, he loses out to Sobers quite handily, as Sobers is definitely in the Lara-Tendulkar-Viv-Gavaskar-Waugh class of batsmen- having either dominated or held his own against some fairly strong attacks on juicy pitches.
