The Maven is more expensive because the rocket that took Maven to orbit is far more expensive. And it also offers far quicker service than ISRO's rocket. The rocket that carried Maven had lift-off and put it straight away into Martian path, directly escaping earth's trajectory. The ISRO rocket could not do that, it put us on a high orbit of earth, from where the Mangalyaan did several orbital raise manurvers to put it into a Martian trajectory. Doing complicated orbital changes in space is both complicated and error prone and this is why Maven was launched months later than Mangalyaan and arrived months early. The last statement is not true. Maven was not launched months earlier and didn't arrive months earlier either. It was only a difference of a few days. While I agree that the technology used may be slightly inferior, but then how do you expect the cost to be so low without some design trade-off? Also, there is no way a budget of $600 million+ can be justified for a country like India's maiden attempt. One might debate the different technologies used, but honestly - this is a moment to cherish. Despite vastly lower budget, without any experience of running such a hi-tech mission, this achievement in technology is exemplary and unheard of! Three cheers!! :cheers:
