You can understand the effect of the blow that whole Shield round was cancelled even before this news.
It was the league he was playing in which is more then justified to abandon it. The test is a week away, which imo should be enough to gather the thoughts, collect themselves and be ready for the test.

I had a serious blow on my face by cricket ball in school. I was bowling spin from a very short distance, batsman came down and hit hard straight. It hit me before I could react. Fortunately, it hit my face upper lip, just below the nose and not my skull or nose bones. It cut my lip from inside, had profuse bleeding and can still feels that area where that cut was. Was really lucky.

Sir, no grounds in the world are equipped to deal with extremely rare, freak cases like these. Hughes was lucky (for a limited time :( ) because there was someone in the crowd who came forward to help. The probability of such incidents happening are extremely rare. The onus should be on designing better helmets that cover the prone area rather than having a team of specialist doctors on stand-by for all cricket matches that happen the world over.
I hope you read that no helmet could have saved Hughes. It wasn't a faulty helmet that lead was the cause here. The area of his neck was exposed due to his position - sure it is a "freak case" but it is great that there was medical help available. All I'm saying is that ambulances etc. should arrive on time. In this case, it might have not have helped but in others it possibly would.

Secondly, we can never be really sure can we? Injuries like these area basically fatal ab initio, as it didn't matter in case of Hughes :( This is not to say that I am all for stadiums that are a light year away from hospitals, but the point I am trying to emphasise is like everything in life there is a cost benefit issue here as well.
