What should be India's approach on 5th day?

Adelaide was the only venue where India could have dreamt of winning a test match but that seems to be a distant dream now. Sitting on 5th day we are looking down the barrell. Chasing 363 on a 5th day turning pitch against a confidence Lyon will never be easy, specially when you have a long tail like this Indian XI has. So how you think Kohli and his boys should approach this? Try to be positive and look to chase this total? Or look to grind out a draw playing whole day? Personally I do not think 2nd option is the best approach as no player in this line up has the capability including skipper Kohli to defend one whole day. Your views?

Attempt it. The approach can be reassessed after half a session. Though Lyon will be a huge concern. These players are no way near against spin as they think they are. The pitch has enough rough to spread nervousness around the camp.

I think we should try and attack Lyon. Not let him settle at all. If Dhawan survives the pacers first up, he can do that job.

If we think we cannot survive one full day defending, then might as well go for the target... Two benefits that I can see :- 1. If we get a bit of luck and top 3 get us to a flier ( 4-5 runs per over ), the fields will be more defensive making it easy to knock singles around and we will be in the match for longer. Then we can make a decision in the last 20 overs depending on where we stand. 2. Even if we fail in the chase ( losing or drawing ), it will create doubts in Clarke's mind on what target is safe...similar case when we had Sehwag in our team...Opposition always had to keep in mind the Sehwag factor and used to declare with target as 370-380 instead of 300. I am sure it would have helped us draw a few matches due to the less no. of overs we had to bat

The only way they can survive (which they WONT) is: Play normal positive cricket. Respect the good balls, solidly defend them. Take singles when possible, and put away the bad balls. Play normal, but positive cricket and defend and leave the good balls. Dont go into a shell, nor dont go "aggressive kohli-like" CHASING target. Just play normal. Thing is they will NOT do this, the pressure is immense and they will mentally implode. Nathan Lyon (and Harris and MJ) will be a terror with close-in fielders on this pitch.

If Australia take their lead to 400, forget about winning. If they declare with a lead of 360 then do this. No definite plan is needed. Take it hour by hour, session by session. Essentially try to play for a draw until the goal post is within the striking distance. By tea time, if we are behind by 150 or so runs and have plenty of wickets, may be we have a chance to win.

India's approach on day 5's of a test match while under pressure has always been the same and that is to fold meekly. While I don't expect that to change, there is no harm in hoping for an unexpected fight to survive.... There is not a one in a billion chance of them even getting close to this target. So maybe they get 1 good session where they don't lose a wicket and that can help them draw this.
