In India, it doesnt matter. Outside India, if you bat well in Tests you should be given an opportunity in the ODIs. You havent followed cricket for long, but when you have you will understand why you are wrong. In Australia keeping wickets in hand for the first 10 overs i paramount. Plus Vijay can attack as the field is up, his natural strokeplay will score runs in AUSTRALIA. THIS IS NOT INDIA WHERE ANYONE CAN SCORE RUNS.

Wouldn't have hurt to include a backup opener in the XI in place of Rayudu. We could have taken Uthappa if the selectors thought Vijay can't score fast.

It is absolutely moronic to drop him from the ODI side. No one expected him to do so well in tests. There is no reason why he can't that form to ODIs.

And how many chances has he got in the last 2 years? He has played a grand total of 14 ODIs in 3-4 years. Many of those were overseas matches and at that time he was not so successful in overseas tests. The last time he played an ODI for India was almost 2 years ago. He is a different player now. Many players in the past have been able to take their form from one format to another. In Australia it is essential to have someone who can blunt the new ball, even in ODIs. Right now we are one down even before taking the field. How do you expect him to do well if you don't even give him a chance? Worse than Dhawan? LOL. It is impossible to be worse than Dhawan.

Your idea of including Vijay can be seen with Rahane who also did well in Tests. Look how he struggles in this format. Infact Rahane was overwhelmingly appreciated by all commies on how he negotiated the bouncers and pace attack. What does he do now? It is not like he is facing thunder bolt, nagging line. Mostly he is up against clevelr bowling with field spread. Once the filed is spread he doesn't have gaps to find like in Tests. M Vijay will leave majority of bals outside the off stump. We will be like 25 for 0 in 10 overs then brain fart will follow. It is a recipe for disaster.

Requirements are different. M Vijay will play 20 or 30 dot balls , cowlash and get out. We did the same in England by selecting Dravid as ODI player when he was not even a regular. M Vijay apart from IPL has not exhibited anything worthwhile in shorter formats. Wonder why Laxman never had his ODI career going.
bowl_out Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I still stand by this. Call up Vijay as a replacement for Rohit for the next ODI at least. Serves three purposes : 1. Try out Vijay as an opener in ODIs in Aus conditions 2. Try out Dhawan at No. 4 to see if he can play the old ball better 3. Give Rohit Sharma additional rest, and not risk playing him half fit. Can decide at the end of the ODI or series (if we do well at Perth), on whether any changes need to made to the final squad (by faking injuries of course).

ThePhenomenal1 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 m vijay wouldn't have done much imo best opening combo is rahane and rohit. let them open. then again, rahane and dhawan got another 50-stand. since dhawan is out of form, it shows that rahane can lead. so rahane-rohit should be fine. our issue is number 4 and number 7. dhoni is now going with 4 bowlers which sucks should be dhawan/rayudu at 4, binny at 7, axar at 8 then 3 pacers - umesh, shami and ishant/mohit
