In what the clergy and Catholic groups are calling a victory, objectionable scenes in Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal (KDM), a Hindi comedy film directed by Priyadarshan which released on Friday, have been dropped by the producers. According to Judith Monteiro, secretary, Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC), representatives of Maharashtra Christian Youth Forum (MCYF), Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), Catholic Residents Organization for Social Services (CROSS) and Catholics for Preservation of Faith (CPF) saw KDM at Paradise Theatre Mahim. “The objectionable scenes that we’d pointed out to the Censor Board are not there in the film,†she told DNA. Hoping that this will work as a deterrent for those film-makers who stereotype Catholics, she said. Our demand for the resignation of those who passed the film without relevant cuts still holds good. We await an apology from the producers, Percept Pictures, for their sacrilegious promos on YouTube. We look forward to our demand that a representative appointed by the Archdiocese of Mumbai be nominated on the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to oversee films concerning the community be fulfilled soon.†MCYF general secretary, Agnelo Fernandes said, “We want to thank the Union minister of information and broadcasting, Ambika Soni, for this prompt action. Censor Board CEO Prajakta Thakur shouldn’t be allowed to continue its head.†The Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Mumbai said, “I’m happy the scenes were deleted. I hope the Censor Board maintains caution in the future while granting certification.†General secretary of CSF Joseph Dias, said they will take up similar instances, irrespective of which religion is shown in bad light. A delegation of Catholic groups along with Fr Reuben Tellis, representative of the Archdiocese of Mumbai, had visited the Censor Board office and demanded the deletion of the objectionable scenes. A protest and prayer procession to the Indian Motion Picture Producers and Film Makers Combine office had earlier demanded the resignation of CBFC chairperson Leela Samson. http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report-catholic-groups-get-objectionable-kamaal-dhamaal-malamaal-scenes-out-1747250

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal: Catholics upset at their portrayal Mumbai: Catholics have threatened to stop the screening of a forthcoming Hindi movie directed by Priyadarshan, 'Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal' if certain scenes making a disresptful portrayal of the community and its priests are not deleted, an official said here Sunday. A delegation of representatives of Catholic groups and a priest representing the Archdiocese of Bombay met and submitted a memorandum to Central Board of Film Certification chairperson Leela Samson Saturday. Copies of the memorandum highlighting the community's grievances have also been sent to Information & Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni and censor board CEO Pankaja Thakur, according to Judith Monteiro, secretary of Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC). "We have registered our protest against the movie. We have demanded a special screening of the movie urgently and deletion of objectionable scenes based on a review by the Catholic community representatives," Monteiro said. Catholic Secular Forum chief Joseph Dias pointed out that stereotyping of Christians has existed in films. "This time with the priest shown in such bad light, Bollywood has hit a new low. We call for the resignation of Leela Samson and transfer of (Pankaja) Thakur," an angry Dias said. Father Rueben Tellis, representative of the Archdiocese of Bombay, also referred to an earlier movie, 'Kya Superkool Hai Hum' which had offensive scenes of a Catholic priest and reiterated the community's demand for a permanent representative on the censor board to prevent such recurrences in the guise of 'cinematic liberty'. The delegation included members of AoCC, CSF, Maharashtra Christian Youth Forum, Catholic Residents Organisation for Social Servicess (CROSS) and Father Tellis. Demanding a special screening by Monday, Monteiro listed out some of the objectionable scenes which have hurt the community's sentiments. These include a Catholic priest (Asrani) dancing with a rosary around his neck and wearing a garland of lottery tickets with a church in the background, an actor (Shreyas Talpade) misusing and indiscriminately using the Holy Water Sprinkler, a priest with a bouquet of flowers with an 'I Love You' message, a notorious character with garlands of currency notes shown with the church in the background, among others. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/kamaal-dhamaal-malamaal-catholics-upset-at-their-portrayal/294457-8-66.html

1) I love how so call saviors and zealots of the great Hindu religion are so, so insecure about their own religion that they have to constantly compare the treatment met to "lesser" religion. They do not have the simple sense to know that if Hinduism can take self criticism and other religions cannot, it makes Hindusim stronger and the better religion 2) These same people live in the west where the MAJORITY religion is mocked all the time but often the other religions are treated with Kid gloves. For example, South Park constantly making fun of Christianity and Jesus, yet Comedy Central censured out the episode about Mohammed and Comedy central had never shown re-runs of those episodes again Seriously are less tolerant religions like Islam the benchmark of these people? Surely it shows the greatness of Hinduism that it allows itself to be criticized when others do not. Do you want Hinduism to be a carbon copy of the religions you hate?

Yay....The usual sucspects are here the moment people question something that apparently has "secular intentions"...No one is saying Hinduism is under threat....no one gets uber sensitive that some age old traditions and practices have been questioned..People are talking about Hypocrisy....either there has to be full censorship or none whatsoever.

Just a minor point to add - the article is from October 2012.

Poor Priyadarshan and Asrani. Of course they don't deserve posts supporting their movie and harking back to "the magnificent TRUE cauldron of culture amalgamation and knowledge" (LoL!). That's only reserved for more "secular" movies...

Have we made progress by leaps and bounds as a nation since then when it comes to sensitive religious matters? I am not going to fight the OP's battle bit I am sure the OP wanted this thread to be a response to what was going on in the other thread.

Punjab bans 'Da Vinci Code' CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government on Thursday banned the screening of controversial film Da Vinci Code across the state. Punjab's decision came a day after the government of predominantly Christian Nagaland banned sale of the novel and screening of the film based on it, saying the content was blasphemous. "The book is blasphemous. It has portrayed Christ and the Christian faith in a highly objectionable manner," Nagaland education minister Imkong Imchen said. However, Punjab government decided to ban its release in the state quoting "intelligence inputs", which predicted violence in case the movie was shown in the state. Though so far, the state had not witnessed any large-scale protest against the movie, the Catholic Church Diocese of Jalandhar sought a ban on it on Thursday morning, following which the decision was taken. The home department order on Thursday said, "The decision was taken after the Christian community expressed strong resentment against the alleged objectionable contents of the movie. So, there was a possibility of violent confrontation at some places, particularly those having sizable population of Christians." Home secretary Dr B C Gupta said the decision was taken at the top level following intelligence inputs about the possibility of violence in theatres in case the movie is screened. Father Franco Mulakkal, the Jalandhar-based spokesman of the Jalandhar Diocese said an 'Anti Da Vinci Code Action Committee' had been formed. The ban comes despite the film being cleared for viewing throughout India with a disclaimer that it is a work of fiction. In Goa, theatre owners have decided to wait for the reaction to the film before releasing it across the state which has 30% Catholic population. A spokesman of the Inox multiplex said instructions on release of the film are still awaited. "I am not sure as to when the film will be screened here," he said. Congress MP from south Goa Churchill Alemao said, "People are unhappy with the film. Jesus Christ is God not only for Christians. He is also revered by other communities." http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Punjab-bans-Da-Vinci-Code/pmredirectshow/1569127.cms?curpg=2

Muslim group protests screening of Vishwaroopam

Activists belonging to the All-India Sunni Board held a protest meeting demanding that “objectionable” portions be removed from the Vishwaroopam film, which was released in the state capital amidst tight security, on Friday. The demonstration, which followed Friday prayers at the Taqwayatul Iman mosque on Nadan Mahal Road, saw protesters chanting slogans demanding that “objectionable portions be deleted” and that the trilingual film be “banned in Uttar Pradesh.” Meanwhile, there was strong police deployment at theatres and malls where the film was to be screened, although the morning screening could not go through due to a delay in the arrival of prints, sources said. But the noon show went ahead as planned and there were no untoward incidents at the cinema halls. Senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Asrey Kushwaha had on Thursday said that Kamal Haasan’s film could be banned in the State if it was found that it “hurt the sentiments” of Muslims and indulged in “character assassination”.

1, Love the so called secular bleeding heart liberals, so insecure about their own existence that they have to constantly come-up with the so aptly called 'liberal rant' and be fashionably different. They do not have the simple sense to know that people call their bluff and they come out looking like losers to normal people. 2, These same people live in fools paradise where the Minority religious demands and sentiments make for secularism, the pseudo form of it. Surely it shows the great stupidity of these people, that despite being witness to the 'halaling' of minorities in other religions bastions they keep hoping that in being pseudo secular they are 'different' 'modern' and safe. :((

Some people should understand how profoundly their voice is unimportant and how deeply the normal world does not care what they think. Democracy is somewhere in-between liberalism and authoritarianism, its collective subjectivity basically, if there is a collective and it thinks otherwise and you are part of it but have a divergent view, you are there figuratively as an opposing thought.

That's not the truth. The truth is Hindus , Christians, Buddhists can take a joke about their religion because their life doesn't revolve around religion. But for the Muslims, their religion comes first. You won't see ordinary Hindus, Christians, budhists holding placards' saying " behead those who insult my religion" in any protests. Its not about majority vs minority or who is tolerant. Its a question of why not apply the same yardstick to everyone?.

No, we haven't. But, what is this discussion about? The discussion is on how people can't make fun of their religion. In this case, it is the Hindus and the Muslims too btw. But rather than accept that fact, the eternal insecure majority keeps indulging in Tu Quoque which even you have pointed out.

Insecure majority. Yes, the majority have to be insecure since one minority is a dogmatic group which runs conversion factorys that harvest souls to change the faith of poor people and another mniority is a potential terrorist group, where some kill people for fun and others will kill the non-believers if given chance.

I think the majority is right to be alert. After all it was a tiny minority of Christian British who perpetrated the most brutal and systematic oppression of the majority in this subcontinent for 150 years. Same was the case in Africa, Americas, Australasia and other parts of Asia where entire civilizations and cultures were obliterated by tiny minorities of Christian persecutors.
