As we approach the conclusion of our away series gauntlet (RSA, NZL, ENG, AUS), India have finished with 3 series losses and 1 series draw. As we head into the final test of this gruelling 13 months of Test cricket away from home, I thought it might be worth having a look at how our top 6 batsmen have gone. Murali Vijay (1000 runs, Ave: 41.66) * 12 matches (24 innings) * 2 centuries, 6 fifties * HS: 146 vs England @ Nottingham Shikhar Dhawan (580 runs, Ave: 29.00) * 10 matches (20 innings) * 1 century, 2 fifties * HS: 115 vs New Zealand @ Auckland Cheteshwar Pujara (763 runs, Ave: 31.79) * 12 matches (24 innings) * 1 century, 3 fifties * HS: 153 vs South Africa @ Johannesburg Virat Kohli (1119 runs, Ave: 48.65) * 12 matches (24 innings) * 5 centuries, 3 fifties * HS: 169 vs Australia @ Melbourne Ajinkya Rahane (1018 runs, Ave: 48.47) * 12 matches (23 innings) * 3 centuries, 6 fifties * HS: 147 vs Australia @ Melbourne Rohit Sharma (282 runs, Ave: 21.69) * 7 matches, 14 innings * 1 fifty * HS: 72 vs New Zealand @ Auckland I think all things considered, it hasn't been a bad showing from our batsmen. All of our top 5 have managed to score centuries away from home, and 3 have gone on to become quite consistent (Vijay, Kohli, Rahane). Rohit got given a chance in Test cricket (which he deserved) but couldn't capitalise on his opportunities and has been dropped (which he deserved). I think Rohit needs to score some runs in County cricket and away tours to be back in contention. I know a lot of people in ICF want to drop Pujara, drop Dhawan, drop Rahul, pick Yuvraj, drop Yuvraj, pick Raina, drop Raina but I think the top 5 batsmen have displayed enough for me to think it is worth sticking with them for a bit longer. Most of these guys will still be there in 3-4 years and I think we could see some really consistent performances if we stick with them. The bowling is the primary area of concern. Thoughts?

To those that say player X has to go ... Every single one of these guys (probably bar Rahane) dominated at home in Tests. Now that we are the end of the away tests, picking another player to replace Dhawan, Pujara, etc. will be difficult to gauge because their home form might be good but away form will only be found out 2-3 years later. I would stick with all of these guys at home (unless they drop their home form) and back them to come good for the next away series.

The problem in away tests is that they didn't click as a team. Mostly it's only 1 or 2 batsmen showing up for a test. If 3 or 4 batsmen perform and put up a good total, the bowlers suck. If bowlers perform, all batsmen suck, if both perfrom, then they drop dolly catches, even if everything goes well, then umpires and drs bites their asses. Last time they all perfromed in Lord's.

Which series was DRAWN ? We lost the 2 Test series in SA & NZ . All 4 test series have been lost .

Yes, it's the bowlers more than batsmen, but only to some extent. Rahane 100, Vijay 95, Sir dancing with bat sword, Bhuvi 50 and 5 wicket haul, and Ishant ripping through batsmen.

Vijay has been a surprise and Pujara a big let-down. Rest have done pretty much as expected. Except for Kohli's failure in Eng

Kohli, Rahane and Vijay have done better than expected....leaving aside Kohli in England. 3 out of the top 6 slots are secure for the time being. Rohit's attitude in tests has been very disappointing. Bad performances aside, I am not in favour of including him for this reason. Dhawan lacks technique to handle high quality pace bowling as an opener. Could have made up by hand-eye coordination. But he failed. I would like to look at another opener. Pujara has to be given more time because his approach to the game is very serious. He is an honest trier. Maybe...this is a bad patch with some technical quirks creeping in. So, 2 slots are open.

Better than expected performance by the young and inexperienced batters during a killer stretch of test matches. I'm convinced with Vijay, Kohli, and Rahane. For Pujara i'm on the fence and feel like he deserves one more season of test matches to see if can cement his place before considering other options. Dhawan and the number 6 slot should be re-considered. Ideally, Vijay would need an aggressive opening partner to form a strong opening pair but I don't think we will have another Sehwag in a long long time. At number 6, I would love to see someone like Sanju Samson given a go but we have a lot dead weight ahead of him in the pecking order.
