Whatever his failings or liabilities, Dhoni's influence/contribution to Indian cricket cannot be measured in just numbers. His journey has been remarkable. What I will miss most is his temperament. Kohli might be ready to lead in his own way, but I hope he has absorbed some of that to balance his own.

SRT100 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 It's disappointing to read so much vitriol about Dhoni. He had his shortcomings in tests but he was a proper leader of men. His success in the limited over formats as a batsman and captain is staggering. The failure to transfer that captaincy success to the test format is a bit of a first in Indian cricket, and frankly that's been a bit of an eye-opener for pundits and fans alike. Yes he has lost a lot away in tests and his tactics not up to scratch but purely as a leader of men he never embarrassed his country and was the consummate professional. The Indian captaincy is a brute of a job that should come with a health warning. You're not supposed to come out unscathed. He timed his exit perfectly in my opinion - the series and trophy was lost today. Kohli is the new inspiration and there was no point pretending otherwise by postponing the decision till the end of the series. Dhoni was the inspiration once upon a time, that sh%it does't grow on trees. As a nation we need to learn to be a lot kinder. His announcement today fills me with pride. Hopefully with the test monkey off his back he can shine at the World Cup which so many of us will be desperate to win again in a few weeks time. It is irrational to ridicule a man for his test record and hope he succeeds at the World Cup. Often an Indian player's stock rises just by being out of the team. SRT100 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 The amount of workload he carried was exceptional. Good post. Remember he has been one of our best batsmen in ODI and T20. Best wicketkeeper in ODI and T20 and for the first few years in Test cricket. He has captained all three formats. He deserves to retire when he wants to. Thanks MS, I am going to miss you in Test cricket. Please please stay on longer in ODI and T20.

An alternative becomes visible only if someone is given a chance but we will never know because Dhoni didn't quit and Srini didn't let the selectors sack him. Also, a new captain could not possibly have lost more than 4 tests in a 4 test series and we already did that twice under Dhoni.

You can get a sense of his stature not by random posts in a forum but comments from his team mates and opposition...I have seen only respect for him...richly deserved... Indian Test cricket would have been orphaned if he had not taken over the captaincy...he did his job with honesty, integrity and best of his ability...not flinching once, never once using his massive popularity to initiate a blame game...something that you cannot say of some stalwarts bar Kumble.... #respect #captaincool :hatsoff:

Being India captain has a shelf life, not longer than a year I reckon for most people.[/quote'] Plenty of Indian captains have had a long innings. For example, Gavaskar - 10 years. Azharuddin - 10 years. Ganguly - 5 years. Other than the stand-in captains (Kumble, Srikkanth) and the reluctant captains (e.g. Tendulkar), minimum 4 years service seems to be the norm.
