Meaning Mcgrath would get a batsman out every 57 balls and Steyn would do it every 40 balls(3overs less). Even Steyn's average is better than Mcgrath. ODIs count for little,[b']ultimately what you do in test cricket makes you a legend. Why is it that Boycott,Sobers,Gavaskar,Clive Lloyd( all hacks in ODIs) are considered great batsmen while Dhoni,Bevan not so? 2. Styen has gotten India all out for under 100 2 times in 2 series(Ahmedabad and Nagpur I think). He has won a match in Lanka. Don't underestimate his ability to bowl in Asian pitches. He can reverse the ball, something Mcgrath could never do. SR is also dependent on conditions where bowler plays majority of his career, SA has by the most bowler friendly conditions. Compare Mcgrath and Steyn stats in other countries may be except in SL Mcgrath stats are better or equal. Philander who has all time great stats for one reason, he plays in SA.So Steyn having great SR is not that amazing. You need lessons in history of cricket Clive lloyd was not a hack in ODis, He hit 100 in 70 odd balls in world cup final against a great bowling attack.He would have been an all time great Odi batsman if he played in this era , he hit the ball hardest and farthest of any other player. Sobers hit 6 sixes in one over and so how can you call him hack in odis , Sobers is supposed to be the most natural stroke maker, search youtube for comments of Dennis lillee and other bowlers on him. Boycott and Sunny were totally one dimensional players who while being good never were match winners like other legends. Sachin is considered a better batsmen than Sunny because he could do all Sunny could do but also could play blazing innings which Sunny could never do. Same is the case with Mcgrath he could most of things Steyn can do in tests but Steyn cannot do what Mcgrath in Odis.

ABDV is a gun bat, he isn't a gun all rounder though. However I would always take a gun bowler over a gun bat. You can always defend a lower score.

I would pick Warner over him to be honest, because he's the best opener in the world right now. While de Villiers is an amazing batsman, there are people who play his roles individually better.

So how is Steyn better than Mcgrath given Mcgrath's greatness in odis.So we can find a bowler in last generation itself who has to be considered better all round bowler than Steyn. You would have thought that'd be enough The credibility of your entire statement has been lost by calling him the best T20 player.
Marut Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Best Test and ODI player at the moment. But I think Kohli is very close to his level, at least in ODIs. And Kohli is much younger, and so Kohli could be an even bigger legend at ABD's current age. In tests, ABD is really in a league of his own, Kohli has some real catching to do, to reach his level.
