diga Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Prime Minister Narendra Modi and International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will meet later this month in New Delhi to discuss India's likely bid for the 2024 Olympic Games. "The Union government is exploring the possibility of India hosting the Olympics. This will be one of the key issues to be discussed by the PM and Bach," sources told TOI. But apparently Modi was keen to know the implications of hosting an Olympics. "The PM is open to the idea of bidding for the Games. He indicated that if we launch a bid, it has to be serious. He obviously did not want a repeat of the 2010 Commonwealth Games which was hit by scandals. He wanted to know the costs, financial implications and other details," the source said. Rome, Boston and Hamburg are already in the race. Potential bids are likely to emerge from Nairobi (Kenya), Casablanca (Morocco), Doha (Qatar), Paris (France) and St Petersburg (Russia) amongst others. It's mostly done to attract tourists. For India, we need to build a whole city, new stadiums , roads and even the airport. Now forget the mismanagement and the corruption but just the idea of IOC members blabbering at the ceremonies scares me. During commonwealth games closing ceremony one gentleman got up and started speaking when he wasn't supposed to, another declared the games to be "the best ever". The queen didn't even show up and a freaking bridge fell days before the games. I think for variety of reasons, we should avoid hosting a large event of this scale.

I heard the Glasgow games organized for a fraction of the cost was an admirable success. All this talk of the concomitant benefits of infrastructure development is just nonsense. The same arguments were used to justify the outrageous costs of CWG delhi. Does anybody remember the $$ 12 million aerostat balloon that was purchased for the opening and closing ceremonies of CWG Delhi and had no practical purpose ? That Balloon was later sold to Goa for 1 Rs. :haha:. It planned to use it during the Lusofonia Games (An event held only for Portuguese-speaking countries. :facepalm:) Focus on education , healthcare and urban development and don't waste money and time on these silly events to assuage the false pride of a small elite minority
