India to Sign Port Deal with Iran, Ignoring US Warnings Against Haste: Report

:finger: to USA the biggest hypocrite country and the reason for most of the world's problems in the first place. This week a US energy delegation visited Iran to review energy investment opportunities :finger: but these people instructed India to observe restraint in dealings with Iran. http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/240916-us-oil-execs-to-travel-to-iran http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4653588,00.html India will push ahead this week with plans to build a port in southeast Iran, two sources said, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi keen to develop trade ties with Central Asia and prepared to fend off US pressure not to rush into any deals with Iran. India and Iran agreed in 2003 to develop a port at Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman, near Iran's border with Pakistan, but the venture has made little progress because of Western sanctions on Iran. Now, spurred on by Chinese President Xi Jinping's signing of energy and infrastructure agreements with Pakistan worth $46 billion, PM Modi wants to swiftly sign trade deals with Iran and other Gulf countries. "Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari will travel on a day-long tour to Iran to sign a memorandum of understanding for development of Chabahar port," a shipping ministry source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The deal will be signed on Wednesday, he said. India's cabinet approved the plan to develop Chabahar port last year. http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/india-to-sign-port-deal-with-iran-ignoring-us-warnings-against-haste-report-760679 Thankfully our Govt didn't buckle and for once are looking out for their nation's interests. This is a big opportunity for India because: 1. It would cut transport costs and freight time to Central Asia and the Gulf by about a third. 2. Opportunity to circumvent the Pakistan-China nexus. 3. Open up a route to landlocked Afghanistan where it has developed close security ties and economic interests. India has already spent about $100 million to construct a 10-mile road in western Afghanistan to link up with Chabahar port. All in all sounds like a sweet deal to me. Iran is our most important and trustworthy ally in the ME and we have similar threats/enemies. china is encircling us all 4 sides, about time we gave them a taste of their own medicine. :bigboss:

Nope, that is Pakistan. 70 billion to pak since 1947. India has got a fraction of that. A lot of that aid is also counteracted by the fact that most of the aid given to pak has been in the form of military aid which pak has used to start and carry out wars against India. Pak has also spent much of its aid sponsoring terrorism against India. Still US keeps giving them aid. So Indians have a case to be resentful of US.

Actually India does not need dollars from the US. It comprises of 1/6th of humanity. It can export stuff from area of its competence like IT, pharma, auto, agro, low cost manufacturing etc. India has been held back by corruption, selfishness and incompetence of the politicians, not by lack of aid money by the US. As for pak, may be they will mend their ways watching few of their school kids getting killed in Peshawar. If not, maybe some more kids will have to die before sense prevails.

How?
The port is located in such an area that the transportation cost would be so high that the prices of the goods imported/exported wont be economically feasible. That is the reason India asked Pakistan for a land route to Afghanistan a week to which Pakistan refused.
