How much does it cost to keep the web option open along with App? Web and Apps anyway display same catalogue, price,etc. Amazon is a global giant in this space and still has web option. Why is Flipkart doing this? Their argument of India becoming a mobile market does not make sense. Web has its own advantages and quite a few customers would prefer it over app. Thoughts?
Old guy Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 they are idiots ..there are atleast 3 things i would have bought at flipkart but ended up going with amazon as their freaking page does not opens on mobile browser and instead of installing their crapware on my phone i just used amazon .. guess what ? it was not enough for them and now they will force desktop users too :nice: only reason why i think they will do this is to get more data ? maybe they know once user install it they buy more ? i am not sure but this is stupid to force people to install app as trend of technology is that more sites are ignoring apps and making very good mobile sites which have responsive design and all feature you could think in app..

A large number of customers still use desktop and they don't have smartphones (or at least good smartphones where the experience of shopping on such apps is good). Many, many people use their laptops at work to browse/shop on ecommerce sites - not only is it convenient for them but they also use their company's data instead of using Mobile data - I expect many of them to switch to Amazon. Above all, desktop/laptop simply offers a far better experience because of bigger screen for shopping on such sites. Also, I have seen that mobile data is still not as reliable as broadband so sometimes you just have to open the website on the laptop instead of app on the mobile.
urbestfriend Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Stupid move. I havent installed any shopping apps in my mobile as it slows down my mobile considerably, now that they are going app-only they are not giving me a choice. I'd rather buy from snpadeal or amazon than flipkart.
urbestfriend Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 On the hindsight, I think it may not be a bad move for them from business perspective as most people access the internet form mobile anyway and dont have broad band connection for accessing the internet. Also it helps flipkart to easily track the buying patterns , and display/price the item based on the preferences, which probably makes up for 25% they lose by going app-only. Also mobile buyers are mostly dont compare the prices across the websites, and flipkart is losing the market anyway because they price higher which can be easily detected in browser version using Buyhatke etc..

The obvious advantages are: * You can shop easily when you are in a mall, based on your location an offer can be sent * Will make more people to install their app due to which they will have access to other data * People are spending more and more time on mobile devices and thats where the future lies and should be the focus

Btw just wait for few years as I can see android going totally web way and these ,boils pages becoming as good as app and maybe even replacing them so I am not sure if this strategy is good long term :giggle:

Now they are also encouraging to order through their App...Some promotions like 30% off from website, 50% off from App ( ofcourse with conditions ) using codes like PANDA30 and PANDA50. Interesting times we live in!

That's how I came across Flipkart and would have never used it if its available only on mobile. So they are potentially alienating those future customers who could come to their website browsing online at work or at home on their laptops or desktops. How stupid is that ? They are going to tank quite soon with this strategy. I thought what they did with Myntra was strange too. I havent purchased anything since it went exclusively app.
