Gurdaspur attack: How Punjab Police bravely battled terror The Union home ministry and the army commander, Western Command, both offered to deal with the terrorists raining bullets in Gurdaspur. While Rajnath Singh's ministry offered to dispatch National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, the Army was quicker on the draw. Troops with assault rifles, rocket launchers and quick response teams were rushed to Gurdaspur. However, Punjab's Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini stood his ground and took charge. These terrorists are for me to get, he is learnt to have told army commander, western command, Lt Gen KJ Singh. Saini, who has operated extensively under former Punjab supercop KPS Gill, personally went to Gurdaspur and sat inside the same police station to monitor operations. Gill too personally led the war on terror in Punjab and is credited with dealing with the terrorists with an iron fist - a lesson that his protégé learnt well. With the DGP in their midst, the battle hardened Punjab police covered all flanks and hit out at the terrorists. The operation could have been over in 15 minutes - it was an abandoned building. They could have set it on fire and smoked out the terrorists or brought it down. The army had access to flame throwers. But Saini told his officers to try and get at least one alive so that he could be interrogated. http://www.dailyo.in/politics/gurdaspur-terror-attack-punjab-police-force-ss-saini-pakistan/story/1/5272.html
Apparently the Punjab SWAT team was trained by the Israelis.

Is the police force brave? ----> Yes Is the police force well equipped and/or trained to handle such situation (it could be commandos disguised as terrorists)? ----> Probably NO Should army once it reached there been allowed to handle the operations? ----> Probably YES What are the positives? ----> Ind police is good enough to handle threats from Pak (army se panga lena toh Pak ke liya dur ki baat hai) :--D

Good to know about the bravery and passion of Punjab police but clearly they were not the best team to take on terrorists and should have allowed army to take over once they were there. Even for people with untrained eyes, who saw the footages, it was clear that operation wasn't handled in best possible way. Former General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern and Central Commands of the Army, Lt Gen HS Panag (Retd) on Tuesday lashed out at the Punjab Police Director General of Police, Sumedh Singh Saini, on Twitter for insisting on using the state police SWAT team and reportedly delaying the anti-terrorist operation in Dinanagar even though the Army was readily available. In a series of hard-hitting tweets, Lt Gen Panag said that it was only because the DGP was keen to launch SWAT and make it a Punjab Police operation that there was delay of several hours in effectively taking on the terrorists. “Insistence on using SWAT…delayed the op. 3 Hrs to move. IA was there but not allowed to conduct op [sic],†tweeted the former Army Commander, adding that the delay was a repeat of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Lt Gen Panag said that the Indian Army units present on the scene of action should have acted on their own. “Centre cannot and does not monitor such ops minute to minute. At best IA units should have taken suo moto action. I would have,†he tweeted. Later, speaking to The Indian Express, Lt Gen Panag said he stood by what he had tweeted earlier and that it was a tactical error and an unpardonable sin for having let the Army sit around and wait for SWAT to arrive when its own men could have done the job. “They were lucky that unlike in Mumbai, where casualties were caused due to late arrival of NSG, the same did not happen in Dinanagar,†he said. The Army, however, has maintained a studied silence on the entire episode. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/ex-army-commander-hits-out-at-punjab-police/#sthash.xzGHzk30.dpuf
I would be interested in knowing, could death of SP Baljit Singh have been avoided if better trained forces had taken over from Punjab Police.

Eliminate any treat once it crosses over the border. Work on intelligence more. Any other offensive plan is not viable because it involves casualties of civilians.

Just protecting your own borders plan is a defeatist mentality when your enemy is next door and has the policy of bleeding by thousand cuts. India shares a vast border with Pakistan, no amount of sensors and surveillance will stop 3-4 pack terrorists from crossing over by cutting wires, digging tunnels etc. Even the mighty Israel with American resource and tech, awesome Israeli tech and training is able to protect their silly small border from tunnels, break-in etc. Even USA attacks potential terrorist countries as you cannot protect your borders everytime and they live tens of thousands of Kilometres away. Offensive plan as explained by Doval sir is very much required and will be very effective response to a terrorist state, it does not involve Indians, it is turning their own snakes on them strategy. No response is taken as signs of weakness and cowardice in this world and specially Subcontinent, so an appropriate response is needed.

That is unfortunate that they are our neighbor but we cannot go aggressive. To much collateral damage. And using evil to deal with other yields nothing in long term. These are nut cases. Find them on the border and shoot them. I am all for getting rid of evil but cannot approve any innocent civilian casualties.
