Texy Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Source However: Responding to the Indian claims, the RAF source they were clearly designed for the “domestic audienceâ€. He told The Independent: “There must have been some clouded recollection on the flights back to India, as the headlines of the Indian press bear no relation to the results of the tactical scenarios completed on the exercise in any shape or form.†The RAF source also stressed that the Typhoons had effectively been fighting “with one arm behind their backs†as they did not make full use of their more advanced weapons systems. Tony Osborne, the London bureau chief of Aviation Week, also suggested caution when dealing with the Indian claims. “These cricket-style scores claimed by the IAF look impressive but should be treated with caution and certainly not as a realistic gauge of combat capability,†he said. zep1706 Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Good but dogfight is a thing of the past. A plane with better BVR capabilities would almost always win.
Clarke Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 ^Isn't that what they said when the A2A missiles first came up ? I know tech's far more advanced these days but the advances apply equally to offenses as well as countermeasures.
vayuu1 Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Good but dogfight is a thing of the past. A plane with better BVR capabilities would almost always win. Agree with you, but you need a sound WVR capability as well.
Detonator Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 SU-30MKI Flanker is such a beautiful aircraft.
G_B_ Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 misleading headlines Russian jets are always better at dogfights. But the world is moving away from dogfights.... its about BVR now. (beyond visual range). The eurofighter is a better jet than the Su30MKI One thing which those in the know are saying on defence forums, the Typhoons did not do well in the Indian climate (based on previous excersies) .... this is backed up by KSA's Typhoon problems. After years of supplying India i feel the Russians have kept Indian weather in mind when designing.
G_B_ Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 And further commenting on the jets Su30MKI is not strictly an air superiority fighter. It is a lot more versatile and designed for multiple roles than the Typhoon. Secondly its a lot cheaper than the Eurofighter. So it can be inducted in large numbers. For every 1 Eurofighter you can buy, you can get 2 Su30MKI. In needs to be viewed in that context. It depends what strategy and budget you have based on what challenges you face. India needs more coverage and numbers to hold against two fronts (china and pakistan). So ideally you would want a cheaper fighter which is better than or equal to what China and Pakistan have which can be inducted in greater numbers. I dont think the Eurofighter is for example equipped to carry nukes which both the MKI and Rafale are equipped for. Its like in football. Eurofighter if a much superior centre back. But MKI can be a winger and a centre back/winger/full back depending on what the country needs.

G_B_ Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Defense noob here. Do we have BVR apart from rafale ? What is pak and China situation ? MKI does have BVR. But obviously the Typhoon and Rafale which are newer types of birds have better one. SU30 is much superior to what anything pakistan has. Including the F16s. China does have Su30s but they dont have the Israeli and French subsystems installed which makes the Su30MKI is different beast. They both have the same body. But one is dressed in short pants and the other is dress in an Armani suit. The problem with comparing with the Chinese is that a lot of their birds are shrouded in mystery. They dont particularly reveal their hand. Especially the newer generation. On paper the J10 and MKI the MKI would edge it. But there are a lot of factors to consider. Such as the skill of the pilot. The J20 which the Chinese are developing will be better than the MKI. It will have stealth based on a low radar signature. That should be better in theory. The Su30 is a generation 4 jet. Eurofighter is 4.5 as is Rafale.

Vilander Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Defense noob here. Do we have BVR apart from rafale ? What is pak and China situation ? pak are getting BVR in their newer f16 block 52( 1 squad) and their jf-17's. So IAF can't scare them off like our mig 29 did to their f-16's in kargil, those days are over. Now they will lock we will lock **** will go down.
G_B_ Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Come on dude mig 29? I really dont think india are banking on that... Clearly rafales and the new russian collab will be the future. By 2020 about 300 mki will be backbone of iaf as rafale numbers build up
