So missing test matches for county cricket is fine? The curious non discussion of Sangakkara's selfishness

I think he was just starting the inevitable decline phase. He timed his retirement smartly.
Yeah. He lost the will power to overcome this decline and that was apparent right through.

A fifteen year old veteran has earned the right to end his career in any manner he sees fit.
Choosing County over Country during a test series doesnt bodes well, unless he was told mid series that he got only two games left to play in his career

Sanga wanted to retire after WC but he wasn't able to. Now he did not announce in the middle of the tour that he would not be playing the next test. He had announced even before the tour that the second test would be his last.

Smith retired early for a lucrative county career as well. He was 32. 32-34 is ususually a very good period for most batsmen. Gayle does it for IPL, he gets slated.

Smith was doing fine, but not as well as before.

Did Sanga retire in his home ground? They were talking about his school and college. That could be the reason' date='wanting to end it in his city.[/quote'] yes. this probably. and cut the guy some slack, he wanted to retire a while back but stuck with it because of jayawardene retiring.

I dont think it was cut short cos of his county commitments ' date=' rather it looked like he extended it on the boards insistence . Hes retired very gracefully not hanging on to some personal record , lot of respect for him on that regard .[/quote'] The personal record he was chasing was his 57 average. There is no other record he could have achieved. Plus abandoning a team in transition when they really needed him is nit vert graceful in my books.

Didn't even realize he did that. Good point that he didn't seem to meet any criticism over such a decision. Very bizarre to select county cricket over international cricket. Can't remember any other cricketer doing so and yet playing for his country later without any penalty.

From what I remember he was planning to retire after 2 matches in the Pak series but he was persuaded to extend further so he played 2 more tests in the India series and then quit.

He made his debut at 23 and played till 38. So where is selfishness? Even if he continue for 2 more years, srilankan middle order will remain the same by the time he leaves at 40. And during this 2 years period, sri lanka may loss a deserving middle order player due to lack of opportunities. These guys played for a long period even without getting payed. He could have easily stopped playing that time citing non-payment as a reason and migrated to uk if he was really selfish.
