For me, Don Bradman was the ultimate batsman. He scored a century once in every three innings. If you truly consider yourself to be a world-class batsman, you should be able to do that.

Very harsh article in my opinion. Even though he may not have meant it that way, the article comes across as a backhanded compliment that downplays many of Sanga's achievements. Somehow, it reminds me of Polgar's father.

Since this transition would have happened around 7-8 years ago, there must have been a 3-4 year period where his avg was very high. The avg of 58 over 5 year period must be counterbalanced by something.

Sachin's records have a much higher sample size. Unfortunately due to the way the Sri Lankan cricket board arranged fixtures we did not get to see if Sangakkara could sustain his overseas record for longer.

Sangakkara for the most part did as well as he could. Of course he could have done better, even Bradman could have achieved more, but it may have been out of his reach.

Definitely. Longevity is one thing that separates Sachin from other greats. He did for more than 20 years what other greats did for 10-15 years.

His father just seems to be a perfectionist. I do not see anything wrong with that, although he may be a little harsh.

Reminds me of Tendulkar's coach. Never praised him throughout his career. Not once did he say well played. Was always critical. But the day Tendulkar retired, Coach Achrekar gave him some of the biggest compliments possible. Daddy Sangakarra is not very nice.

My father too is a perfectionist in certain aspects but he reminds me of my short comings in private. Not in front of the world..... Issue with SRT was that he came onto the scene so young that it took him 3-4 yrs to find his footing and then had a decline for 2 yrs at the end. From 1993-2011 WC, he averaged around 60 over 150+ Tests. In this sample, I reckon that his avgs may be even better.

As a kid I used to complain when my dad compared me to other kids. "Mr Malhotra's kid got 98 out of 100 in the Math exam. You got only 82!". "Mr Sharma's son won the inter-school science competition! You didn't even participate!" "Mr Arora's son plays the piano! You just play video games!" This dad is doing the same thing. To a 38 year old. Publicly. That too one who has achieved so much. On one of the most emotional days in his son's life. Criticizing him and comparing him to others. LOL.
