In this Test - batting: Mishra and Ashwin > Nohit As tail they have overachieved (esp mishy), as a prime bat, Nohit has underachieved. (And those two contribute by bowling as well)
But Rohit's presence in the team is a huge morale booster for the others. Without Rohit's presence, I doubt the tail would do so well. I doubt Pujara scores a 100. I doubt Ishant bowls so well.

This excuse for Rahane that he cannot bat at no3 needs to stop, if he is a top order batsmen other than opening he should be able to bat at any spot. If Rahane is good and wants to be good, he should be chomping to bat at no3 and not run away from it. What is point in having good batsman at no5 if you are losing early wickets.

So why didn't we ask Sachin to open the batting and run away with it when we were struggling for a decent opener for a decade .

No, he is not a top order batsman. That's the whole point.

Why is this criterion applicable only to Rahane? Not Kohli? ... Or the great No-hit?

Sachin always played no4 in his career even in domestic cricket. Rahane was always a no3 or opener in domestic cricket so why does he have to play at no5, if he is good enough he should be able to bat at no 3 end of the story. This escaping from new ball and scoring runs when someone else does all the dirty work happens in Pakistan. I don't rate Clarke or Chanderpaul for that reason, your best batsmen should be batting no3 and no4 period. Opening is specialist role, I can understand if Rahane was forced to open.He is playing at no3 he should be jumping with joy to play at position.

putrevus, What are you talking? Lets say Rahane is a very good #5 (better than Nohit at #5) And lets say Rahane and Nohit are both poor #3 Who do we play at #5? If Rahane sucks at #3, find a different #3 - rather than flog him for being good at #5. There is a role he is very good at, so give him THAT role (since the other guys arent greater at #5 anyway).

Summed it up nicely. Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

No' date=' he is not a top order batsman. That's the whole point.[/quote'] Why are we condemning Pujara poor guy had blunted new ball very well for late order batsmen for most of the tests he played till he got dropped, who knows how he would have done if someone else was doing that job of blunting new ball for him. Even in Lords test where Rahane was taking bow after bow, it was Pujara who blunted the new ball after Dhawan got exposed by Jimmy early. Rahane was slotted at no5 initially because Pujara was no3 and doing very well, Kohli was doing very well at no4 so there was no other spot for him to be promoted once Nohit got dropped. Old captains tend to take no5 spot after they have achieved a lot in international cricket, as a youngster who is just starting Rahane should be chomping to bat at no3.

Batting at 5 requires different set of skills. Chepu is not ideally suited for that since he likes toplay and play and then play some more; he should be slotted at 3 and Rahane moved to 5. In a 5 batsmen theory, the only choice is whether Rahane or Nohit should be at 5.

No one knew how good Sachin was nor was he their best player when he started at Mumbai .So he batted at no.4 and its a moot point Sachin was our best Batsmen for years in international cricket so why didnt he take responsibility and open or bat at no.3 .Why didnt he have the technique to new ball ? So now best Batsmen should bat at no.4 ? :cantstop: Tell me which great player(best player in the team) apart from Sachin batted at 4 majority of their career ? As for Rahane he shouldnt bat at 3 because we have a better no.3 in Pujara .Same reason why Dravid batted at 3 instead of Laxman

In a 5 batsmen theory, we cannot have snails like Vijay, Rahane and Chepu in same X1 - period. You need a lower order aggressor that can be a Laxman or a Gilly. If it is 5 batsmen - one of Chepu/Rahane misses out. Six batsmen ( my preference ) - All happy

Rahane is an aggressive cricket .In test cricket u don't need to blindly slog like Rohit thinks to score quickly Check videos of Rahane's knocks at Lord's or Brisbane or MCG boxing day to know how aggressive cricket is played in test cricket .

To add to my post and counter to arguments like seaming wickets, blah blah - this series has proven that no one can be consistently depended upon anyway. Cue Rahane at No.3, Chepu 2nd innings, Rahul, etc. Rahul should anyway be out of equation for atleast an year. He should try the WK/batsman option and he is young enough to try that. And just to remind the forum - They were dead against Dhawan too before first Test and only injury to Vijay subsided the storm. Since he scored in the only Test he played, now he is automatic. Fickle minded fans :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

Sachin did not bat at no4 when he started once he and everyone knew he was the best batsmen in the team he was batting at no4. Nobody is asking Rahane to open, opening is specialist role not everyone can do it, no5 is not specialist role. You stack you best middle order from 3 to 6, 6 being the slot for trying new comers. If Pujara is batting at no3, I dont have any issues with Rahane being at no5, so what happens if Pujara is not there in the team, Rahane should be batting at no 3 period. You bring in another newcomer just to play no3 so rahane can sit at his cozy no5 spot while this new comer is made sacrificial lamb, when people are giving allowance for Rahane and his lack of technique why is the same allowance not given to another batsmen.

+1. Just because Broad hit a Ton or Gillespie hit a 200 - you don't see them come and bat at No.6. Tailenders contribute valuable runs at times but that should always count as Bonus rather than put burden on them to score always - like Mishra and Ashwin ( just in this innings ). They should not come before No.8 if we have to extract any value from their runs - We simply DO NOT have an all-rounder in Tests. Don't try and force-fit anyone into that role.
