Clearing some misconception about Kohli

I couldn't be there in the match thread but saw some speculations going on. So I thought I would put in my two cents

1) No, Kohli is not going to go with 4 bowlers next match. He will be sticking to his 5 bowler formula. He has said multiple times that he would go for wins even if chances of loss become higher. He will not go for a draw even if India is 1-0 up going into last match. He wants wins. He has that mentality

2) No Kohli is not going to drop Aaron or Yadav and bring in Bhuvi. In fact Bhuvi might as well retire as there is no way Kohli is going to pick him in tests. Kohli is very clear about having attacking bowlers over defensive ones

3) No Kohli is not going to drop Yadav or Aaron just because they couldn't take wickets. They are his core bowlers and he IS going to give whatever support they need and encourage their growth. Ishant might get a look see in next match but these will be his core three fast bowlers for some time. He is not going to give up on them just because they go for some runs

4) No Kohli, did not lose his mind when he gave his fast bowlers overs. People wanted Ashwin and Jadeja to continue. However, Kohli is not thinking about just this match or this series, he is also in the process of settling his core attack. Those spells given to Aaron and Yadav where they were asked to bowl fast was extremely good for their confidence and will help develop them

5) Kohli is a new captain. For the first time in a long while we have a capatin who wants to win and who wants to encourage bowling. Let's not start whining just because he goes with 6 bats and give pace bowlers chance. The backbone of our fast bowling was broken under Dhoni and it will take some time for it to recover. We are extremely lucky that we have got a captain who encourages fast bowlers so much. So do not think of in terms of one match or series. I am very sure we will see a marked improvement in our fast bowling under Kohli very soon

6) I for one am extremely excited about Kohli's test captaincy and believe it won't be long before we are dominant in test and in the top 2. He is new and will makes mistakes but very soon with his mentality we will be unbeatable.

Point no.4 is very important and very true.

Kohli has a long term view and idea about what kind of a test side and what kind of test players he wants. He wants a team which always goes for wins. He wants a team full of wicket-taking quick bowlers and wicket taking spinners who can turn the ball. Virat wants more stroke-making batsmen who can set up test wins for him.

He will stick to this plan irrespective of the immediate results. He seems to have the farsightedness, conviction and mental strength to do so.

Developing the right kind of players is the key to a great test side or even ODI side. Picking, encouraging and motivating them.

We will enjoy the brand of cricket that he will give us.

We will reap the benefits of the bowling culture he will develop in Indian cricket for ever.

Yep. Dhoni took a team at it's peak and milked it for wins. Kohli is going to leave a legacy behind him which will help Indian cricket for decades

Forgot to add one point

7) Kohli has a natural affinity for attacking players, both in bowling and batting. No, that does not mean he is biased. He gave Rohit chance before Pujara as he thought he was aggressive. However he then judged them on their actual performance and is clearly supporting Pujara now. He has shown no bias towards any player till now. He will however give enough chances for players to prove themselves.

Kohli style of captaincy will attract more people to watch test matches. He will not allow the game to drift away.Yadav & Aaron will have lot of support from Virat to go allout in sight of wickets without worrying about runs.Lots of attacking cricketers will flourish under Kohli

Agree. We will lose tests along the way but exciting times ahead for Indian test cricket under Kohli's captaincy. No more fat RP Singh will play a test match out of the blue and no more Unadkunt playing in fast pitches in SA.

I think he played yadav and aaron purely because he expects them to take wickets and create opportunities and that's what they have done consistently since they started playing, even in this match on this pitch Aaron finished 21/1 and Yadav should have been 19/2. Plus the intangible effect of batsman having to deal with good pace and then go back to facing spin kept them from being too settled.

Excellent points...

Some of them, i have thought about them and most of them, i haven't...

well....We might loose some matches under him but it will be for greater good.....

But how good is he in spotting young exciting talent??

There are some very good points on this thread .... Ind cricket has treated its fast bowlers poorly. We have to start making the change. It is time to make things right and keep a long term focus .... Luckily, we have a test captain that understand this.

One of the reasons that I followed this test is because I saw two fast bowlers in the playing 11!

Kohli might like players like.... ( he has an eye for the right kinds of players who can win matches )

Nathu Singh - Quick bowler who is said to bowl 135 to 145 k and has a fast good length delivery

Shreyas Iyer - Very High scoring rate batsman in the 5 day format but with a high average too.

Hardik Pandya - Genuine all-rounder who can bowl 135 to 142 K when needed and is above 6 feet. Can bat at no.6, play fast bowling, hang in there when required and hit big sixes too when accelerating is needed.

Samar Quadri - A leg spinner who can turn the ball miles, get fast turn off the deck and knows the importance of varying degrees of turn with different deliveries.

Sarabjeet Ladda - A leg spinner who seems to have rediscovered himself and getting, turn, bounce, wickets, ...bowling good googlies too.
