Malcolm Merlyn Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 Quote A day after India formally got membership to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) - which China hasn't been allowed to enter because of its dodgy proliferation record - an editorial in the Chinese state-run Global Times has called Indians self-centered, self-righteous and perhaps lacking morals. The entire editorial heaps insults on Indians who according to the Chinese paper don't understand nationalism, have no knowledge of morals, cravenly follow the west and are spoiled. The editorial is talking about the coverage of and the failure of India's bid to get into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). Both the Indian media and the Indian government blamed China's opposition for India's failed bid to the NSG. It appears the Chinese newspaper's editorial wants to give Indians a lesson in nationalism and patriotism. It criticizes Indians for their supposed adulation of the West. The US, France, Canada and several other countries backed India's NSG membership bid. "US backing adds the biggest impetus to India's ambition...The US is not the whole world. Its endorsement does not mean India has won the backing of the world. This basic fact, however, has been ignored by India," the edit says. The editorial seeks to enlighten Indians about foreign policy. "By cozying up to India, Washington's India policy actually serves the purpose of containing China." Indians also needs to learn about nationalism, the editorial says. "India's nationalists should learn how to behave themselves. Now that they wish their country could be a major power, they should know how major powers play their games," it says. The editorial keeps repeating that China "follows the rules", and the rule is that an NSG member must be a signatory of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and India isn't. It says 10 countries opposed India's NSG bid. "India is not a signatory to the NPT, but is the most active applicant to join the NSG. Before the Seoul meeting, the Indian media played up the prospects of its bid. Some even claim that among the 48 members of the NSG, 47 have given it a green light, except China," the editorial fumes. The editorial - which makes no mention of China's nuclear proliferation for which it has been shut out of the MTCR - seeks to put China on a (dubious) moral high ground. "It is morally legitimate for China and other members to upset India's proposal in defense of principles," the editorial crows. And then its claws really come out. "Recent years have seen the Western world giving too many thumbs up to India, but thumbs down to China. India is spoiled. Although the South Asian country's GDP accounts for only 20 percent of that of China, it is still a golden boy in the eyes of the West, having a competitive edge and more potential compared to China. The international "adulation" of India makes the country a bit smug in international affairs." However, the Global Times does believe that unlike common Indians, the Indian government is alright. "On the contrary, the Indian government behaves decently and is willing to communicate," the editorial concludes. Can any Indian publication post something similar against China or Chinese people without pissing them off and potentially hurting trade relations? Frankly neither country has what it takes to be a major power in this region let alone the entire earth.

And this chinese articles came after Indian media went hammer and tongs on the chinese opposition to Indias entry into NSG.

And their exports to India will become 0 as well.With America increasingly becoming hostile and looking to raise tariffs againist China.Japan being also in the same boat with US how many export destinations can China afford to lose?Or do you believe China can export to Cambodia Laos North Korea Pakistan and be happy? If the Vietnamese The Fillipinos The Indonesians can stand up and give the Chinese a reality check what stops us?Nothing!

Malcolm Merlyn Posted June 30, 2016 Author Posted June 30, 2016 China pulls up chief negotiator for limited global support for anti-India position at NSG Quote HONG KONG: The Chinese leadership has pulled up Wang Qun, its lead negotiator and Director General of the Arms Control Division at the Foreign Ministry, for failing to drum up significant global support for China's position in Seoul which blocked India's entry into the NSG . Highly placed Western and Chinese sources said that Wang Qun had told Beijing that at least one third of the NSG nations would endorse China's position. However, the position was totally in the reverse, with as many as 44 nations backing India and China only having the support of four nations. Beijing now fears that the fallout of the NSG outcome could have an impact on a crucial verdict expected soon from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in a case brought by the Philippines concerning China's territorial reclamation activities in the South China Sea . As things stand, Beijing's stance flies in the face of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of which it is a signatory. China's big fear now is India could use the same ploy that Beijing used in Seoul at the NSG plenary and back The Hague Court's decision which is likely to go against China. Highly-placed sources said that the global support for India's position at the NSG could well be leveraged by New Delhi to back the enforcement of The Hague Judgment - a scenario which could isolate China and could even trigger its exit from UNCLOS. Informed sources said the focus now shifts from the NSG to the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague where a judgment is expected, which when enforced, could force China to give up land in favour of the Philippines. China has launched a worldwide propaganda campaign enlisting academics, legal experts, diplomats and foreign governments stating that such legal proceedings are invalid. But this position of China's is contrary to the rules laid out by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of which China is a signatory. China claims that it has the support of 60 nations who believe that arbitration at The Hague is illegal. China's worry now is that post its inability to generate global support for its anti-India position on NSG at Seoul, its position at the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague could meet the same fate, and this time, it could have to pay a very heavy price. High-level sources said that Seoul's outcome has "shocked China". The government thought that its emerging superpower status would guarantee the support of at least 15 nations against India. Western sources said China is "very sensitive"to possibilities of being isolated, and the developments and outcome at Seoul "came quite close to isolation". China is paranoid about what might happen once the Permanent Court of Arbitration gives a verdict against Beijing and in favour of Philippines. To generate global support for its position at the NSG, sources said China is silently bracing itself for a Seoul fallout which would mean an overwhelming International demand on Beijing to accept The Hague court's Judgment and give land to The Philippines. All of this, said sources, illustrates that China is happy to enforce the letter of the law when it suits its purpose, but is prepared to reject Internationally accepted regulations when it feels its interests are under threat.
