We often come across unknown names who have  achieved some extra-ordinary feats in their times.Will be posting few players here.These will mostly include cricketers who played before 1983.Hope you enjoy reading about them.

Wilfred Rhodes

Wilfred Rhodes (29 October 1877 – 8 July 1973) was an English professional cricketer who played 58 Test matches for England between 1899 and 1930.Beginning his career for Yorkshire in 1898 as a slow left arm bowler who was a useful batsman, Rhodes quickly established a reputation as one of the best slow bowlers in the world. However, by the First World War he had developed his batting skills to the extent that he was regarded as one of the leading batsmen in England and had established an effective opening partnership with Jack Hobbs. The improvement in Rhodes's batting was accompanied by a temporary decline in his bowling performances, but the loss of key Yorkshire bowlers after the war led to Rhodes resuming his role as a front-line bowler. He played throughout the 1920s as an all-rounder before retiring after the 1930 cricket season. His first appearance for England was in 1899 and he played regularly in Tests until 1921. Recalled to the team in the final Ashes Test of 1926 aged 48, Rhodes played a significant part in winning the match for England who thus regained the Ashes for the first time since 1912. He ended his Test career in the West Indies in April 1930.

Jim Laker

James "Jim" Charles Laker (9 February 1922 – 23 April 1986) was a cricketer who played for England in the 1950s, known for "Laker's match" in 1956 at Old Trafford, Manchester, when he took nineteen wickets in England's victory against Australia. He played 46 Test matches between 1948 and 1959, taking 193 wickets with a bowling average of 21.24; in all first-class matches he took 1,944 wickets at 18.41.

 

He is best known for....

Laker was the first player to take all 10 wickets in a Test match innings, ten for 53 in the Australians' 2nd innings of the 4thAshes Test at Old Trafford in 1956 (the only other bowler to take all 10 wickets is Anil Kumble of India in 1999). Having also taken 9 for 37 in the first innings, Laker's match bowling figures were 19 for 90: no other bowler has taken more than seventeen wickets in a first-class match.[2] Laker was married to an Austrian who did not know much about cricket. On the day of his achievement when he arrived home, his wife asked him, "Jim, did you do something good today?" after she had taken hundreds of congratulatory telephone calls. Remarkably, Laker had also taken all 10 wickets in an innings for Surrey against the same Australians earlier in the season, the first time a bowler had taken all ten against the Australians since Ted Barratt did so in 1878.[4]

It is astonishing given that he played during the world war when the matches played would have been less.

Vijay Bharadwaj....was man of the series in a tournament featuring South Africa(probably the No1 Odi team of those times), Zimbabwe(Their best team in their history) and Kenya....played 4 matches....did not bat or bowl in match 5....and was promptly dropped after 5 more games to play a grand total of 10 ODI's.

 

Averaged 28.00 with the bat and 19 with the ball in ODI's not too shabby.

Vijay Bharadwaj

Raghvendrarao Vijay Bharadwaj ( born August 15, 1975) is a former Indian cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and right-arm offbreak bowler. He was a key architect of Karnataka's three Ranji Trophy triumphs in the 1990s. He won the Man of the Series award on his debut one day international series against South Africa in the LG Cup in Kenya in the 1999–2000 season. Bharadwaj currently coaches Karnataka in Ranji Trophy.

 

Vijay Bharadwaj was first called up to the Indian national team in the 1999–2000 season after an impressive season in Indian domestic cricket in which he scored more than 1000 runs. He made his ODI debut in the LG Cup in Nairobi and initially impressed with his bowling in particular. Where he got 10 wickets at an impressive average of 12.20 and also scoring 89 crucial unbeaten runs lower down the order, all through the tournament. he was a part of the Karnataka s three ranji trophy triumphs in the 90's .Captained Karnataka from 2000 to 2002.was one of the seven players to represent the Indian team during the 90's .

He continued to produce strong performances in domestic cricket which caught the selectors' eyes and allowed him to stay within contention, but other than a 2003 tour with the India A team against England he did not get further opportunities at international level.

Some Pakistani spinner played ONE T20I match, bowled 1 over, took 3 wickets and never got selected again...

Anthony Stuart....played 3 ODI's.......in his 3rd ODI took a 5 wicket haul which included a hattrick against Pakistan and then never played another match

Interesting thread, but I am not sure either Rhodes or Laker qualify under the definition of unknown cricketers.  On the contrary both are famous names.

Or perhaps they're not as known as I assumed?  Seems hard to believe.

More Indians are probably aware of Laker since Kumble matched him with a 10-fer.  Rhodes, not so much.
