The importance of zip and bounce off the pitch

To become a wicket taking bowler in international cricket , two of the important traits that help a bowler are ...zip and bounce off the pitch. This applies to both pacers and spinners. Factors like speed in the air, accuracy and movement are discussed very frequently but this aspect is often ignored.

We saw this on display yesterday when Shami was bowling. He picked up wickets using these. Umesh was not trying to generate bounce and, the moment he did,  he started picking up wickets. These are obviously not the only factors required but are very important ones.

Most feared attacks and top bowlers have or had these traits. The WI quicks of the '70s and '80s, Walsh, Ambrose, McGrath, Kumble, Warne, Murali,  Lee, Donald, Steyn, Ntini, Morkel, Imran, Akram, Srinath, Broad, Anderson.

We saw Yasir doing well at Lords when he got the ball to zip through.

Many techniques are used ( some of them simultaneously ) to achieve these and they include imparting overspin on the ball, if not then atleast not imparting underspin, landing the ball on the seam, gripping the fall firmly and hitting the deck hard for bounce, having a high arm action, using the wrists more effectively , putting more body into the delivery and using more shoulder in the action for bounce etc.

Among our bowlers , Shami, Ishant, Aaron , Jaddu , Bumrah does this consistently. Ashwin does it in the subcontinent.

We need to find more such bowlers and improve these aspects for the other bowlers. Among uncapped pacers from India , Nathu Singh and Avesh Khan have  this ability and even Ankit Ranpoot to some extent.

Those are important factors but the there is the skiddy kinda bowler who doesn't get bounce or zip of the wkt but is slight side arm n gets skid of the track n swing as well as reverses the ball, bowlers like Making a, Waqar, Shoaib.

The most important factor for me is wkt taking ability n that could be natural pace of some one like Thommo, Shoaib. The tallish bowler who bowls the channel n gets some movement n bounce outside the off not too skillful but accurate like Mgrath, Ambrose, Courtney, Garner, Siddle. The slinger or side arm bowler like Waqar, Malinga, Shoaib who can can be awkward due to their point of release n need to be part to deceive as they won't get much bounce but can swing n reverse n tend to bowl still to stump n reverse n get a lot of clean bowls. The last category is the special one as it is the few who can be versatile in all conditions, bowlers like Steyn, Lillee, who can move the ball of the wkt n in air, have a good action n wrist so along with decent pace be versatile.

Now let's look at the Indian bowling line up, Shami is the most versatile, has a good action , wrist, decent pace, can move the ball in air n off the track both ways, now critically the bowler also can adjust his length per conditions , and bowl length, fuller or have a good short one, like Steyn, Bond, so all Shami needs is to bowl to a plan n stay injury free n a captain like Virat as he has shown to be a thinking bowler n works the batter every over by setting them up.

Umesh is a slinger or side arm variety n lady so he needs to target the stumps n move the ball n target lbw n clean bowls, follow his predecessors Waqar, Malinga, fuller length, yorkers, surprise with short one at the chest, incoming deliveries as a variation to get lbw n bowls n keep the ball generally around off stump.

Now we look at Is hang tall, high arm gets bounce, not too skilled with the ball in terms of swing or seam or varying lengths per wkt, so he needs to look at Walsh, Ambrose, Mgrath n focus on bowling the channel albeit a bit fuller as most games he will play in Asia n its pretty to look at but not effective as batters are beaten but don't get edges to slips, Ishant has to deceive the batters by using the crease and varying the angles n making batters play at deliveries they should've left alone or using the incoming one more effectively by keeping one straight .

Among the other bowlers Aaron to me is most promising as he has pace, can seam n also swing the ball, and he should be in the test squad as he can be a versatile bowler n can get a batsmen against the run of play which is important , he has a tendency to try too much n sprays it a bit but with a nurturing captain like Virat he will be more effective

@MCcricket

There can be a bouncy zip and a skiddy zip too.  The flip-sides are loopy bounce and non-skiddy lowish deliveries. Waqar and Malinga used the skiddy zip. Thomson and Shoaib got a lot of bouncy zip too apart from the skiddy zip.

Unless a bowler is a classical outswing bowler with tremendous control  and  understanding of the game,  he would require either the bouncy zip or the skiddy zip to take wickets in various conditions.

I have not had the chance to watch all the potential talent in action. Suyal looked very promising but he seems to be completely out of the selectors' radar.

Aniket Chaudhry is another seamer who seems to have improved a lot but I have not seen him bowl much. He is tall, swings the ball, gets bounce and is left-handed....but I don't  have a clear idea about his pace and stamina to sustain pace.

Sandeep Warrier is another seamer whom I would like to watch. Have not seen him bowl in  recent times.

Chama Milind impressed one and all in a U19 WC....it would be nice if we get to see how he is bowling now.

Aniket used to bowl early 130s to low 120 S earlier but since last season has improved quite a bit n bowls around 135 ks and gets extra zip of the wkt as he is around Ishants height, he moves the ball of the track n brings it back too now, has a good short one that comes back n hits the upper body so along with a good action he is a package , needs more athleticism overall but is ready for test cricket n ahead of Sran as a bowler also surprisingly overlooked by selectors despite his very good domestic performances, maybe coz he is from Rajasthan, also I hate seeing what's happening to Suyal

Zip and bounce off the pitch is mighty critical for an edge to be induced off a batsman. The India WI test match showed exactly that when on a dead pitch, the Indian seamers got the ball to shape a bit. Makes a massive difference between a play and miss and an edge to the slips.

Also one more factor is natural length, all bowlers have one natural length where they get more outta the pitch some versatile bowlers get a good bounce regardless of length as they have a good action n wrist behind the ball n tend not to float the ball.

Shami seems to be that kinda bowler whereas on the flip side Sreesanth used to float the ball when he pitched it up, also intent n once the bowler learns to be effective bowling g multiple length he gets dangerous as Steyn n Waseem could do that also Marshall n Lillee could
