Not really, first test we scrapped a draw would have lost if not for rain and Dhoni's valiant innings. 2nd test we won and 3rd test was a flat pitch pitch at oval, both teams scored big runs. Because they do not just reflect what one team has done in one series. They take last 3 years of performance into account. SA were #7 but they still had enough points to not gain a lot of ranking points. If SA had ranking points below 80 then they would have gained quite a few points by beating Aus but because there was not much difference between Aus and SA when it comes to points, they could only manged to come up to 5. Also, rankings do not differentiate between home or away win. I dont even remember the last time SA had beaten Aus in SA. Link to comment

If SA 80 or less point, SA would have gained more points, but they didn't because the point difference between the two teams not that high. Also, ranking system does not differentiate between home or away wins. If that was the case, SA has not beaten Aus in SA for a long time now. SA could have gained if they had won 3-0, but they lost last test which neutralized their series win. Points are awarded for winning matches, there are no added points for a series win. It has always been the case, not just now. In past years, only one team Aus used to win away from home. Now, SA does win overseas but not regularly and their home record has not been great in last few years. Link to comment
