How is he not an established player ? Edited December 1, 2016 by express bowling

That is what I meant.Read again.. if he was non-established he can make a case for being jittery....but the point is he is established Is he complacent because he is established-Again no,Rahane is not complacent. But he is established but still a jittery starter who never looks confident and that is exactly what I said...He needs to encash on flat pitches and weak bowling or purple patch...till now haven't seen any of those. Riju23 Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I agree that he has some sort of issue on slower pitches where the ball is not coming onto the bat. I think his technique is fine but he likes to score quickly and that is not always possible. It's also clear that he is well capable of overcoming this, see his two centuries in the same test vs SA at home (and the century against NZ) Most importantly, he is as good on the seaming/bouncing pitches as any of our current crop of batsmen - he got 96 in SA, a hundred in England, a hundred in NZ, and IIRC two hundreds in Australia. He is a star and there should be no questioning his spot at No. 5 in our lineup IMO. Sidhoni 1

At the moment Rahane's batting woes is bit of a puzzle. Edited December 1, 2016 by fineleg

I agree there is no memo sent out to all batmen to increase their S/R but Kohli asked Pujara to quicken up . He has also dropped Pujara to include Rohit in the team, a batsman who scores at a faster S/R. Kohli wants his batsmen to change the game in a session i.e. give more time to his bowlers to take 20 wickets. This latent need to score faster doesn't only mean more aerial shots but also unnecessary shots. Players who can't rotate the strike or who play a lot of dot balls may feel extra pressure chase wide delivery/ step out of crease unnecessarily and end up edging the ball. Pujara in first innings at Mohali instinctively took on the fielder at deep mid-wicket not because he wanted to score faster but because he has become more attacking now naturally ending up losing his wicket after scoring a 50.
fineleg Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 @rkt.india can affirm - but I think Puj always used to attack spinners, even in his early Tests? Against pace, he goes tuk tuk.

His innings at FSk in delhi on minefield against Lyon who had a 7-fer in the first innings is one of the best innings against spin especially the pace at which he scored those runs. He scored a double hundred against swann and monty in Ahmedabad in 2012, 131 on a rank turner in Mimbai in the same series, and always scored quick against spin. Against pace, he is less scoring shot and tries to play safe and waits for bad balls.
Cricketics Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 I chose "Other" For me he has just been complacent and that is it. He got starts in most of those innings but has not been able to convert. I am not worried about him. He has played some cross shots and gotten out because of complacency. I don't think there is something wrong with the technique. He has to just stop playing too many cross shots when the ball is turning square or big, especially when he is not among runs recently. Play more straight bat.

I got the feeling from that interview that it was a suggestion to Pujara about not getting bogged down, while batting outside Asia...rather than trying to maintain a high SR while batting. Even now, Pujara is batting at a SR of only 52 but is looking fluent, putting away the bad deliveries and never getting bogged down. On that tour to the WI, although the bowling was not that good, Pujara was getting bogged down unnecessarily and that was putting pressure on him and he got out trying to get a move-on. If we check out the SR of our top 5 batters in the last 2 test series In India, it is not that high for batters who have played all the test matches. That would not have happened if there was specific instructions to up the SR. Vijy Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 Hard to figure out what exactly is wrong. Even when he gets going, the early stages are always somewhat scratchy. Seems to be a nervous started, except on true pitches (not much swing/spin).
