Cricketics Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 By looking at the trophies his country won under his leadership? By looking at the general way he captains his the team and the way he selects his players and has overall success? Is world cup win a must? If a captain won 2 world cups in his captaincy like Ponting did, is he a greater and a better captain than some other captains? Is Graeme Smith less than Ponting that means since he never won a world cup? Ganguly never had much success but surely was one of the better captains. My personal favorite remains Hansie Cronje as he was the first captain I remember watching as a kid who would look like a proper captain, making proper changes and he always looked like someone whom the oppositions would get overwhelmed from. Would you have rated Dhoni, the captain, as highly had he not won the 2011 world cup? Trophies matter to you a lot or only to a certain extent. tweaker 1

maniac Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 A great Captain sets an example himself does his job well.....inspires from the front and motivates others to perform to their full potential and most importantly leaves a legacy through mentorship. Mosher 1
BeautifulGame Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 The fact that SA continued to choke under Smith in world cups shows that wasn't that good a captain in Odis Ganguly the odi captain was understandable because he came up against the greatest odi team ever.

maniac Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Agree with the op where he mentioned Hansie Cronje...closest to the perfect captain I have seen till his shameful downfall. had an unbeaten test and odi streak even ...a top performer individually...inspiring. Motivated youngsters. brought out talent. Encouraged and tried innovation. Good with strategy. Pretty much checked all boxes. too bad what happened and also the greatest choke of all time will always leave a stigma. but the best captain I have ever seen. MechEng 1
CG Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Only Kids will judge captaincy by trophies won or winning percentage.Fact is Captain is as good as team.I would like to judge a captain by efforts regards to team building for future.Dhoni did some good by backing Kohli,Rohit, Ishant.

You put same players under Dhoni they will choke as well. They have mental block.Under diff captains in various league you see same SA players fail in big matches.

Its pretty much useless if the team builds doesnt win anything . Any team/captain's legacy is determined by the success achieved. Its what that matters.

Dhoni T20 WC victory should be ranked higher as he had a bunch of youngsters .

We chocked in 15 finals in a row before Dhoni became captain and were knocked out of both WC and CT (at home too) successively before Dhoni lead us to T20 world cup.
CG Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 And who were the players who won us finals?Gambo,Dhoni,Sachin,Bowlers fact is we lost finals to great Aussie team or we were not good enough.
BeautifulGame Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Just now, CG said: Not really nobody calls ponting a great captain. You would still hear about borders legacy. Border won the world cup and won them the famous Ashes in 89 in England. Thats what build his legacy. And the team build went on to dominate International cricket including the series win in West Indies. Border's legacy was build through his team achieved.

So SA were now good enough to knock NZL in 2011 world cup now? I already said we were unlucky to face the great Aussie team in 2003 final. Not sure why u are reiterating the same.

Yes but his biggest contribution was he built a team from ruins. He did not have greatest win percentage or most WC wins still he is considered greatest captain.

Because his team achieved great success. No one cares about win percentage nonsense apart from stats obsesses . Its what trophies that matter.

SA players do not have big match temp.We lost finals as we had players like Ganguly,Dravid,Sehwag who choked in finals and even Sachin except odd innings here and there.Gambho, Dhoni made a real diff in performance in finals.Cricket is a team game after all and bowling performance in finals improved likes of jaddu in finals.
