Australia in focus at the ICC Champions Trophy

Two-time ICC Champions Trophy winners Australia are looking to lift the trophy on a third occasion this summer, and they have a squad that is very much capable of doing so.

They recorded back-to-back wins in 2006 and 2009, but were denied the hat-trick when India won in 2013.

While India have lifted the trophy twice – once in 2013 after beating England in the final and the other in 2002 when they shared the title with Sri Lanka – only Australia have won two ICC Champions Trophy finals.

The batting is very destructive but it has no anchor, it will be prone to some collapses, the  pace bowling is by far the best in the world, the spin is meh, It's a strong team but don't think it has all the bases covered, will take just one bad match to knock them out of the tournament and that can easily happen with that batting.

Smith is the anchor... It was almost impossible to get him out.. He has had an average IPL though, but different format..

 

Agree on the spin part.. Maxwell can chip in, but you don't win matches in England with spin.

Replace Henriques with a proper batsman and that's a pretty tough team to beat.

They need a 5th bowler.. The alternative is Travis Head who can bowl and bat.. But bowling looks weak with two part time spinners

They have 40 overs covered with Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Zampa. The remaining 10 overs can be shared among Maxwell, Henriques (if he plays) and/or someone else. Not that bad IMO especially given the batting which can chase any total or put up 330+. On flattish pitches it would be a nightmare to go up against them

That's risky.. You can't always expect your batting to get 330+. Like kira said, there are too many hitters in the side, and few anchors.. So, their batting is bound to fail one match and if their bowling fails that match, they are out.

But how many times do we see matches played on helpful surfaces? Not many and they do bat deep. Too many match winners in that team and on helpful tracks they have the bowling to bowl out opponents cheaply too with likes of Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins in their rank. Quite a solid short format team IMO.

The only team that could have challenged them was India but the selection is so screwd up that it wont happen.

dhoni, rohit and yuvraj all three need to be out for India to win.

Unless they have a bad day in office, no team will challenge them. Very strong team led by modern day Bradman.

I'm not even sure why they are bothering to play Zampa in England. They can go all-out with Starc/Cummins/Haze/Pattinson and get Head/Maxwell to bowl offbreaks. Their batting will certainly be tested if there is some seam/swing on offer but otherwise they are miles ahead of the competition.
