Rohit is in the conversation as the 2nd best opener based on the numbers since 2015. It's between him and Guptill. Warner is a step above based on his strike rate, but it's hard to fault a 58 average at a 94 strike rate. 

Individual numbers do not matter. What matters is what the numbers do to the team. This is not the Tendulkar era where one man can take you to victory. The numbers you have shown show individual brilliance, but what it does not show is how he has robbed the middle order of batting. The rate at which he scores from 10 to 30th over, can not our no 3 and 4 go at the same rate. I will easily take an opener who has and aggressive approach, and not the one who bats long. He makes it easy for the bowlers. They know he is just going to stick around. This point was made by our beloved captain in the post match conference in regards to the batting approach by Zaman and how it disturbs the plan of the bowlers. I will only take the above numbers if we have a very poor batting line up, which is not the case. It surprises me that very few on this site can understand this point.

Runs scored in the final carry much more weightage than in the earlier games. I and so will he easily trade his any earlier innings for this final duck. Only the top 3 have done maximum batting for us with their conservative approach, how then was the expectation from middle order to cover up. And if it was so, we should have dropped the first 3- their job was done in the pre final games. Atrocious.

Everyone knows final scoring is important but if he can't score you want to play another opener just for finals who does shyt in regular games?

 

Best players play in the fiinal and Rohit is the best in India in terms of openers and hence he was playing and will continue to play unless he starts to suck.

I am just saying, he needs to change is his approach. It is selfish and hurts the team more. Don't care on his individual numbers. If he cannot change the approach, then someone new needs to be tried

Who is saying he should be dropped right away? Can he change his batting approach. Be aggressive after he has settled than trying to bat out 40 overs because that hits the team, doesn't let the middle order come into the game

Why not give Gambhir a chance , if we can give one to Yuvraj , why is Gambhir kept back -  Is this beacause of their chemistry with Kohli ?

Rahul when fit should should compete with Sharma for the opening slot.

I am biggest Gambhir fan but we can not bring him at this time as others are waiting to be tried. 

 

You won't find a bigger Gambhir supporter than me on this site or on internet.  Yet I feel others deserve chance ahead of Gambhir.

I agree with you that younger players deserve a chance and definitely should come in but new players are not going to challenge Rohit and Dhawan for the opening pair , its a status quo - I feel Gambhir can do that and its purely politics blocking him and Yuvraj is being given push because of Kohli.

Also GG for his ability to captain a side makes him want to be in there
