Only use if one of the threads is very old and one is new to avoid confusion. Also no need f you are moving to joke section etc, let the users figure out themselves So basically don't use redirects most times is my advice

I moved his thread with the post therein to the politics section and merged it with the Obama in India thread. So does this need a redirect or?

IMO people should be aware there is a politics sections and then it is common sense where the thread was moved. But most of things can be a mod's personal preference and instinct as long as standard of moderation doesn't wary too much Also remember, though users ease must be kept in mind, mods also don't need to be overly burdened with things
