SUMO Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 except WC semi and CT final...he hasn't failed to be fair. In most of the other he is either not out or have small but significant contribution.

Although the last 2 are "merely" good/very good knocks. 90 vs Australia was among his best WC knocks.. Complete disdain for Mcgrath, Warne and Fleming I'd rate it as high as his 98 against Pak.. Unfortunately, ended up on the losing side. Edited December 19, 2017 by bowl_out Gollum 1

And to be fair, except for that match vs WI in 2009, he has not played any true match winning knock too. He has only played supporting role in other good contributions he made. Not to demean them, but he has not really lighted up anything so far to be called the best chaser ever from team India when it really mattered. Gollum 1

Coco cola or a Compaq cup , wouldnt classify them as big stage . They are just todays bi-laterals . The match against Pak in Centurion wasn't big stage enough for you? Or the 96 SF? Or the 2011 QF?

Warne and Fleming bowled superbly in that game. McGrath started off with 3 maidens but was hammered later on. Really good game. Gollum 1

Centurion knock was one of his best , infact one of my fav knocks in ODI's - Agree on this . 96 SF we lost .Memorable for wrong reasons . 2011 QF , arguably the 3rd/4th best knock in the Indian innings ? No one remembers his innings .

But I won't downplay either of those 2 knocks simply because of the context of those matches.

Shane Lee was pretty average but Fleming was quality. Averaged near 25 in both formats. Was superb in the WCs in 96/99. What was great in that game is that Indian lower middle order had a real go at the target even when Tendulkar got out. One of the few times I didn't feel bad after a defeat.

Virats knock was far from memorable but it does get a lot of weightage cos it helped us win the World Cup final , I am sure Tendulakr would agree how difficult it is to score runs in a WC final ;)

Yeah just noticed his ODI record is actually damn good for a 4th/5th choice bowler. I was just going by how unthreatening he looked as a bowler.

(i) the kind of pitches, innovation and shot-making abilities and bats were different back then, (ii) he had the knack of optimally uising his abilities, (iii) he made use of the pressure applied by frontline bowlers and was bowled in the correct part of the innings. all in all, he was a very 90s bowler along with larsen, ealham, etc
Jimmy Cliff Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 Larsen was the probably the best of all these bowlers (stats be damned). Used to bowl a really nagging length which made it hard for the batsman to drive or cut/pull. Gollum 1
