H1B visa is one way America has remained so dominant in science and technology, it’s the perfect brain drain of global talent, it might get bad press for it companies abusing it, but US has gained much much more by taking the cream of global talent in science, tech and finance

There is no way US or Trump will end it, there may be new restrictions but too important to US’s dominance to end it

not all of the best talent is necessarily international, perhaps about 50% of more is domestic. hence, we could see a drop by a factor of half or so. second, I am not convinced that all of the H-1B holders are "cream of global talent" since many of them work fairly routine jobs (albeit with a specific skill set based on higher education). for these reasons, I think it's possible for DTrumpf to implement this rule without too much pushback.

h1b were never cream

the metric was always cheapness. The cream of the IIT's will not face any restrictions as they will get the really well paying jobs. This is also true for IIM.

This notion that America has gained also need to be looked at. In an era of a global workforce you can just open a campus in places like Tel aviv and still be number 1. There was a report I read whereby for cutting edge RnD a software engineer in Tel aviv with similar abilities to silicon valley was 40% cheaper than an American worker and 20% cheaper than an H1B.

The capitalist classes will always want a free movement of labour and no restrictions on anything. You do anything about it and your are ruining a "competitive edge" , wherever that means. It is not just Trump. From Brexit to the rise of the right in the Europe tells us that undercutting wages is having real repercussions.

Lets be honest here, do Indians in states like Maharashtra like people from UP and Bihar cutting their wages?

This is how H1B is abused by both Indians as well as American corporations .

Recently in Disney I think, they had laid off full time employees and replaced them with cheaper H1B workers which I believe turned into a lawsuit.

now regardless if you are a beneficiary of this program or not ,it is unfair because the whole point of H1B is to get talent from elsewhere in case you can’t get these required resources in USA.

I mean we can’t complain and curse that illegal Bangladeshi labor in India works at 25 p on the rupee in comparison to Indian labor and then cry foul when the H1B program is criticized.

infact illegal immigrants in the USA are the ones not taking the American jobs because the average American will not do 90% of he jobs these illegal immigrants do like gardening, cleaning toilets etc etc...in fact H1B visas  are the ones literally stealing the jobs.

90% of housewives from Andhra work as QA testers lol and they can’t put a sentence of English together if their life depended on it and ..surely the locals can handle a job like that(no disrespect if anyone is in testing,I believe there are some challenging testing jobs as well)

What trump needs to do is increase the basic salary for an H1B  to around $150,000 a year.

Automatically that means only the best will be hired.

If I am not wrong average American salary is around 50k USD while H1B , Minimum pay is 70-80k , if an average american is able to do H1B jobs then why companies  hire H1b workers? The type of  talent they want must not be available below 100-120k  in local market That's why they take H1B route

It is not an unqualified American local vs the average Indian engineer debate....that was never the problem....it is a technically qualified American guy vs a H1B worker debate.

I don’t think an American IT guy will come as cheap as a H1B guy...yes the basic premise of the program is fine...don’t have enough qualified people sure use H1B...it has become oh American IT worker is too expensive let us use H1B.

The housewives example is just an example of how abuse happens .If these people can do some IT jobs like QA and running basic Excel formulas,Sure you can train local talent but that is not the main point of my post.

this visa and america's immigration system in general plays a big part in their overall foreign policy. i don't see it going away pretty much ever. look at the two largest recipients of H1B visas, the chinese and the indians.
