The problem is that it is never taught from the point of view of conversing. I remember studying Kabir Doha in 3rd language Hindi. Never understood the purpose of that. I still struggled when I went to Delhi and Lucknow for college and was very shy to speak in Hindi with my batch mates who were native Hindi speakers. But over the years, my Hindi only picked up when I worked started speaking in Hindi with colleagues, again proving that one can learn a language only by conversation and not just from textbooks. I made it my life's mission to use Kabir's dohas dohae in random conversations and on the internet. Had to get something out of cramming meaningless medieval inanities. On a related discussion: What language do you think in? For instance, I can speak Hindi/Urdu and Gujarati just as well as (if not better than) I do English. However, if someone asks me a question or I have to formulate a plan of action, my thoughts are always in English. New guy 1

So yeah it was always weird for me, as most cultural things and all I learnt from British authors like Enid Blyton and Agatha christie didn't apply to india. So writing comes naturally in English better than any other language I might have situational Hindi thoughts but like you, philosophical, long term or creative thoughts are always in English But with friends and brother always spoke in Hindi so am very fluent in Hindi.
