Kolpak deals after Brexit - PCA to support two overseas players in County cricket

The Professional Cricketers' Association would support two overseas players per club in all formats from 2021 to allow Kolpak signings chances to continue playing county cricket.

Following Brexit, the England and Wales Cricket Board has advised counties that Kolpak registrations will be terminated at the end of the 2020 season.

The agreement is in line with the deal the UK secured with the European Union.

Kolpak deals have been used since 2004 for players mainly from South Africa.

Counties are already permitted to have two overseas players in the T20 Blast - but have been restricted to one in all other competitions, including the Championship, since 2007.

Kolpak contracts are named after Slovak handball player Marius Kolpak, who won a landmark case at the European Court of Justice in 2003.

They allow sportsmen from countries with associate trade agreements with the EU, such as South Africa, Zimbabwe and Caribbean nations to be afforded the same right to free movement as EU citizens.

Kolpak players are not classed as overseas players by the England and Wales Cricket Board under the terms of their contracts, but they become ineligible to represent their country at international level.

There are currently 17 South African players under Kolpak contracts for the 2020 season.

A number of those, including Essex off-spinner Simon Harmer and Hampshire fast bowler Kyle Abbott, agreed deals beyond 2020 towards the end of last season.

After the EU freedom of movement ends this December due to brexit, players playing under Kolpak deals would no longer count as local players in County cricket. 

 

There is a proposal to increase the overseas quota to two players per side. But all cricket playing nations would qualify for this and not just south africa. So the competition would be tougher 

 

This might end up as a blessing in disguise for South African cricket as their domestic players would not be able to easily move to England.

We go in 2021 Dec. They might have finished rebuilding by then.

 

If we can beat or even draw against Aussies I would be confident of our chances in SA

Next time we go they won't have the services of Philander (him and Cape Town a better love story than Mahela-SSC), ABDV, Amla, Morkel, Faf, maybe even Elgar....former 2 helped them win the 1st 2 tests last tour. We are winning there next time no matter what, impossible to rebuild a team from scratch in 2 years.

Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw might be back. But it's not a done deal because the uk government might have to extend the transition period beyond December 2020 if a future deal isn't concluded. 

 

They have said they won't do it but come November their tune might change. If that happens Kolpak players might get another year or two. 

 

Regardless it will discourage any new promising players who are thinking of going down that route

India is good enough to loan some fringe players to other countries.  Guys like SHeldon Jackson who averages 50 in domestic can play.

Our young prospective players should try to grab these positions in county.  What's stopping the likes of Gill, Sarfaraz, Kishan and co from trying there. Iam sure they are good enough to occupy the overseas players' spots.

They don't qualify to play in county.

I think they qualify as long as BCCI lets them. They allowed Pujara.

 

But Indians qualify as overseas players which has a limit of only 1 per side. Kolpak lets Saffers play as domestic player.

There is a qualification of certain number of international caps for overseas players. Every domestic cricketer can't play there.
