Harsh Thakor Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) This is my list of the of the 12 best batsmen of all time combining all types of cricket in order of merit Jack Hobbs Sachin Tendulkar Don Bradman Viv Richards Brian Lara Gary Sobers Walter Hammond Barry Richards Javed Miandad Len Hutton/Sunil Gavaskar Graeme Pollock Hobbs on top for phenomenal longevity,consistency and performances on bad wickets .In 1st class cricket he has no equal with 61237 runs and 197 centuries.Tendulkar in international cricket had greatest longevity at the top in all forms of cricket.Bradman is statistically in a different league but was not at his bset n wet wickets or against bodyline.Never proved himself against spin.Neverthless in tests the greatset of all time .Viv took domination of bowling to heights unexplored in both forms of the game.Lara bore the brunt of one one of the weakest batting sides ever and had the greatest penchant for mammoth scores.Sobers was close to the perct batsmen mastering pace and spin in all conditions.Hammond was power and skill personified and was unfortunate to play in the era of Bradman.Miandad was the ultimate craftsman in a crisis who niggled opposing bowlers more than any batsmen of his time.Barry Richards would probably have been the best batsmen of all time in a full fledged career if you asses his technical prowess,record in 1st class cricket and performances in unofficial WSC cricket supertests where he topped the averages.Arguably none came closer to batting perfection as Barry,Hutton and Gavaskar were the ultimate epitome of technical perfection and concentration with Gavaskar virtually breaking all the batting records of his day .Greame Pollock wasa left-handd equivalent of a Sobers or Viv exhibiting batting genius rarely seen on a cricket field. This is my list for only test cricket in order of merit Don Bradman Brian Lara Gary Sobers Sachin Tendulkar Len Hutton/Sunil Gavaskar Jack Hobbs Walter Hammond Graeme Pollock Greg Chappell Alan Border Rahul Dravid Bradman's record tests speaks for itself and even in the most challenging later eras or modern era would have averaged between 70-75.In this respect promoted the likes of Lara,Sobers,Hutton,Gavaskar.Gavaskar faced the greatest bowling of all time.Sobers surpasssed Viv in consistency and was more proven in a crisis.Included Greg Chappell who was statistically the best batsmen of the 1970's adding World series cricket and had the best record against West Indies.When the chips were down in tests Alan Border and Rahul Dravid were the ultimate to bat for your life. From the current players, S Smith in tests.

Tempted to give it to Viv Richards as he was as good as others in tests at his best and phenomenal in ODIs. Can perform in pressure situations as well. As a bonus could bowl a few overs of off spin. In this case, the title of the King does him justice! Those who narrowly missed out: Considered Sachin but I cannot see him as successful as a top order batsman in tests as Richards (avgs 60+ in the top order in tests) or as a MO batsman in ODIs. Sachin used to prefer to open in ODIs and slot himself in MO in tests (went for best positions in both formats) Lara could have made it if you consider his phenomenal test achievements and his performances in his first 100 ODIs or so. In ODIs, he was a little mercurial so loses out but a great player of both pace and spin PS To keep it simple, Bradman and Sobers were not considered as Bradman did not play ODIs and Sobers played just one iirc, but these guys would be great in all formats (may consider them in future as a lack of opportunity to play ODIs should not be held against them) Edited April 10, 2020 by zen

Placing Smith at 2nd based on pure average, Viv at 9 and Kohli at 6 . Gavaskar below Kohli .... OMG... ,
Gollum Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Not in order of merit: *excluded active players, cos we don't know how things might change...Ponting would have made the cut in 2008 but not after retirement, it was clear he couldn't carry a weaker batting line up, also somewhat an FTB * should have played sizable number of tests, so no Barry Richards, G pollock, G Headley..only 2 slots for pre-1950 era cos quality then was lower Bradman Viv Sobers Sachin Lara Sunny Hobbs Kallis Sanga ABDV Greg Chappell Border
