Lengthy lockdown will kill more people than Covid: NR Narayana Murthy

Coronavirus impact | Govt should lift lockdown entirely or face implications: Axis Bank CEO

Mahindra group chairman Anand Mahindra on Tuesday suggested a "comprehensive" lifting of lockdown after 49 days, saying the industrial recovery will be painfully slow if the government goes for “sequential opening" of different parts of the country.

Unfortunately.. choices are losses of lives or Economic losses which will directly impact lives as well..

Ghana a country of 3 cr people, warm weather, ended lockdown 10 days back, 16 deaths overall from covid19 till now... just google.

We should be looking at the likes of African countries and Pakistan ... warm weather, BCG , whatever it is virus doesn't seem to be causing damage here

I am kind of disappointed as imo we did not follow evidence based approach. This virus was not getting completely stopped through lockdown. It keeps coming back and we have to learn to exist with it. IMO, lockdown should have been removed totally on 15th April.

There will be plenty of comments from healthcare practitioners as well in favor of the lockdown.

I agree that there has to be a rational approach but what you've been stating overall in terms of minimal risk to Indian is based on some anecdotes. The eggheads at ICMR would be in a better position to make conclusions from the available data and drive policy updates.

It is basically countries in 1 billion population affected majorly vs 5 billion affected relatively minimally. I don't think we can say it's anecdotal when viral spread in entire world population is supporting this cold vs warm differentiation

1 billion is mainly cold and ravaged - Europe, cold parts of North America like Newyork, Qom of Iran (Feb March was cold), Wuhan of China (again during winters)

Vs.

5 billion warm, with relatively negligible harm - entire African continent (1000 deaths only) , South Asia (India, Pakistan BD etc.) Asean (Vietnam, combodia, Thailand, Indonesia etc.), South America, warm parts of North America -Texas , Mexico etc

The correct metric to look at is deaths per million population. It is available on worldometer.

Imagine that

Wealth hoaders upset about not being able to hoard more wealth

Scientists say no clear evidence of hotter weather reducing impact of coronavirus

Is it just the wealth hoarders? shopkeeper, small business owners will tell the same thing. On first day of lockdown -24th March , 74 cases recorded in India, today 1500-2000 cases recorded every day. 30k recorded cases - for all we know, the actual number with the virus or the antibodies could be anything - 3 lac, 30 lac, 3 cr ...we don't know, only thing we know - it would be multiple times higher. Brings the question of ultimate effectiveness of lockdown. Raises Questions on actual death rate - could be drastically lower. Brings the question of cost vs. benefit of the lockdowns (particularly for a warm country imo).

I think from a uk perspective we should now be able to choose what we do. Many people support the lockdown as they are currently getting financial support from the government and a lot of people are actually scared. Even my parents who are usually cool about things and were saying it wasn’t a threat when it first arrived in the UK.

In my case my place of work is still open so I have to go there every day still, I live on my own so pose no danger to any family members and am young and in good health. Those that want to stay at home still can. Those that want to get on with life should now be able to do so now that the infection rate in the uk is coming down

I agree, and i think the direct consequence of this is a change in people's attitude or in some cases a formalised change in corporate policy to minimise risk of another peak.

- If you work from an office or in a sector, do you NEED to go in the office? If not then continue to work from home as much as possible. This will have a positive effect on rush hour traffic as more people are staying at home.

- if you have the cold or flu, do you NEED to go into work and potentially infect others? Businesses and firms everywhere in the world need to be flexible with their staff to allow home working or sick leave to minimise the risk of infection spreading

- Better cleanliness and hygiene routines by firms and individuals, esp the British habit of putting a food item on the table or a table top directly between eating without knowing if the surface is actually clean.

These business heads should start using public transport in India to get to work in order  to convince people that it's time to open up.

^^It's returning soon. This is what I mean....try n normalise as much as possible...every decision must be evidence based. Sweden never closed schools. Germany also reopening schools. Under-20 age group covid19 fatality rate is extremely less.

Although I must add, government has done brilliant by not allowing public transport without social distancing. It must be enforced everywhere till a vaccine or a treatment is found. Extremely crucial.

Lockdown is about saving lives, first and foremost. Business can wait.

But on a micro-level, its about changing habits and introducing a new way of life.

Teaching uneducated masses about hygiene.

Giving citizens a sense of how to live without traveling and spending needlessly.

Encouraging corporations to change operational procedures by allowing people to work from home.

The result: less traffic, less population density, self-motivated cleanliness, and beautiful weather.

From a governance stand-point, its also about identifying citizens and illegals, enforcing the law, bringing them direct subsidies through online platforms, and having them register for the NPR, which will eventually serve as the data for the NRC.

Lockdown will create a stronger, more authoritative government. I don't think the major cities in india will EVER return to life pre-lockdown. They will remain 'red zones' and all travel and activity will continue as currently regulated. This is the new normal.

And frankly, you guys should be happy. Your quality of life will improve.
