Exciting Indian Test Batsmen

Most exciting Indian batsmen to watch in tests post 90s .... In the order of debut:

 

Retired

• Kapil Dev - Overall a little inconsistent. Was in the last phase of his career in the 90s but played some good knocks like hitting 4 6s in a row to avoid follow on in England the 100 in SA. Good to watch when in the flow
• Tendulkar - knock of 150 odd vs. Aus for e.g. 
• VVS Laxman -  esp. during his special knocks
• Sehwag - whether pace or spin, he delivered a demolition job. At times, making it easy to other batsmen to hit 100s (for e.g. Dravid and Tendulkar benefited with 100s vs. teams such as SA and Pak) 

 

Current

• Pandya - 100 in SL, 90 in SA, and 50 in Eng 
• Pant - entertaining 100s in Eng and Aus
• Shaw - similar to Sehwag in attitude
• Aggarwal - seeks to play attacking cricket

 

 

Who is your favorite from the retired and current lot?

Agree with all of your choices. Will add Azhar among the retired players, hate the guy but peak artistry. Though his stay was short I always had a lot of time for Sadagopan Ramesh, lazy elegance, played the ball very late, wristy and had some good performances against strong bowling attacks. Dhoni too could be fun, remember him taking apart Akhtar and co. in that 2006 tour, that Chepauk 200 against Aus was again a super exciting knock. For a #7 batsman MS was handy, so many times he would go ballistic before declaration.

 

Among current lot I also find Kohli's batting exciting. Shows a lot of intent, decisive in stroke play and can take the game away from opponent, looks to get on top of both pacers and spinners. Had some memorable counter attacking knocks in tough SENA conditions esp in 2017-18. Closest to Ponting in style.

I would have chosen KLR but OP said tests, our boy was damn good till circa 2017, then he lost it completely and most recent memories in that format don't paint him in good light. 

 

But overall KL must be one of the most stylish batsmen around. At his best no better sight in world cricket.

Current lot : 

 

Rohit Sharma. I don’t think anyone has the same shot range in cricket. Once set people talk as if even a 300 in a odi game is realistic for an individual score. I mean can it get more exciting than that? Only guy who ever came close to his stroke play was AB Devillers. Only thing that separated the 2 is nerves of steel.

 

Virat Kohli- Watching him lead a run chase is always a pleasure. When in zone makes finding gaps seem like a cake walk.

 

KL Rahul- the next Rohit Sharma no doubt.

 

Pandya- He might have a lot of flaws but one of the (non-West Indian) cleanest strikers of the cricket ball in the world today.

 

Shardul the batsman. clean striker of the ball as well. Plenty of batting ability that needs to be nurtured.

 

Shaw- This kid needs to keep his head straight. He is the next Sehwag and in fact can become better than Sehwag.

 

DK- when in flow love to watch him bat. That only happens 1 in 10 times. The remaining time he doesn’t waste too much time so nothing lost there either.

 

Pant and Iyer- Look scratchy, can look like hacks but they always look to score runs and get them at a fast rate and on top of that very clean strikers of the ball.
 

Aggarwal- like to watch him bat against spin. I would say best player of spin in the world today.

Where is Guntur Rayadu....he is still not retired.

From those Indian batsmen I watched , I would rank them as follows

 

1. Sunny

2. Sachin

3. Dravid

4. Kohli

 

Exciting has to be Sehwag. But the 4 listed  above were better than him as test batsmen.
