Can this team beat any ATG ODI/Test X1?

Picking a team with players who are acknowledged to be great players and may make ATG X1 of their teams but will never be considered for world All time XI’s.

The challenge is to get closest to a great team without picking any obvious tier 1 greats. This is my team.

Do you think this team can beat any ATG odi or test side ?

Chris Gayle

Greame Smith (c)

Ross Taylor

Mahela Jayawardena

Damien Martyn

Mark Boucher

Shakib Al Hassan

Shaun Pollock

Anil Kumble

Waqar Younis

C.Walsh

This is why AT X1’s are meaningless.

Kumble,Waqar and Pollock can all run through sides when in rhythm.

I have seen guys like Taylor and Gayle destroy solid attacks on good surfaces.

Likes of Jaya,Smith and Martyn have played clutch knocks against all odds.

Can we say that any ATG combo can beat this side convincingly say in a 10 match contest. 5 ODis + 5 tests?

By beating If are you implying an upset - any team can win on its day.

If you are implying beating an ATG side with more better players consistently - No.

So let’s say you put together an ATG X1 list in odis or tests. Now you think they will beat this team or team with players with similar level competency and accomplishments?

You are saying that team will beat this team 9/10 times with 1 let’s say as a placeholder for an upset?

Yes, I will put my money on the team I select to win the series. The margin can be 9-1, 8-2, or 7-3.

Alright let’s see your X1. Also please don’t pick and/or options. Let’s see a pure X1 that can man to man destroy this team.

Also 7-3,8-2 means there are no flukes. an ATG team at least in a hypothetical scenario should be unbeatable.

For example, all the weapons in the world should make me invincible in a war, shouldn’t it?

It's a strong team. Although, I wish you'd put in a left arm fast bowler in there. This team can win matches against all time great teams. 10/10? Nobody can, but they will have more than just a few moments.

Damient Martyn was such a treat to watch and such a composed player. Very 'un'Aussie in attitude.

Also @zen cricket is a game of combinations. Having the best batsman, best bowler, best keeper etc doesn’t always mean anything.

For example would you pick Younis Khan and Jayawardena over Ponting and Kallis on a dry 5th day pitch?

Would you pick Donald over say Ashwin/Jadeja if you had 1 bowling slot on a Kanpur/Nagpur type surface?

I would say perfect apart from Sanga and Sehwag who may hover around the 2nd/3rd ATG lists.

Arguably, Pollock and Waqar in ODIs and Kumble (at home :-) ) In Tests are Tier 1... thats why as you say they can run through sides.

But a team of "tier 1" greats will beat this side 7 to 8/10 times ... Zens team would in tests for eg

ODI team to beat that one convincingly in a series:

Tendulkar, Rohit, Ponting, Virat, ABDV, Buttler, Kapil, Warne, Starc, Ambrose, McGrath

Fair point. I put together a set of players who would do equally I well in tests and odis combined. For example not just pollock, waqar or kumble but even Jayawardena would be considered a tier 2 odi ATG Atleast in sc.

Ok, so this is my attempt at an XI that wont get into an "all time " dream team, but are greats of their nations and in a lineup that works in ODIs and Tests
