He is the all rounder India should look forward to in tests, not Pandya.

If Pandya plays that many tests esp. at home, he could avg better with the bat

Overseas too, Jadeja usually plays on relatively batting friendly surfaces iirc

There is no basis for that. Pandya is not a better batsman than Jaddu at any level, be it FC or tests.

Difficult to say that he is technically superior either. Talent, technique, temperament, no factor to show that he could be better batsman than Jadeja.

Jadeja made his debut in 2012. I am not sure if you rooted for him as an AR when he started. Pandya is currently similar to Jadeja when he started out

After 7-8 years since his debut, it is convenient to suggest that he can be an AR, while ignoring that Pandya has just started out in tests and so far mainly played overseas. He averages 60+ with the bat in subcon :winky:

Playing as an AR esp. in alien conditions is a responsibility. It is one thing to score runs at home or when the team is doing well when expectations are low. Another thing to be judged based on your AR performances.

Right now both can play as per situation but not put pressure on Jadeja, who plays as a specialist. Take the initiative to develop Pandya, who has excellent potential and put the responsibility on his shoulders

It's not a suggestion, he is already an all rounder.

I responded to this post on other thread. Why is it again quoted here?

Did you consider him a test level AR in 2012? His batting avg till 2015 was even less than Pandya's, whom you currently have doubts on (I won't be surprised if you had doubts on Jadeja as an AR. It is easy to join a bandwagon) :winky:

At least Jadeja was proven FC performer.

It's ok to root for a player, but what's the reason?

1. Talent

2. Technique

3. Temperament

4. Proven FC performer

Which aspects suggest that Pandya can do well in future?

It's ok to root for a player, but there has to be reasons.

Pandya has a better batting avg, similar bowling avg, and a better avg difference. Despite that if you think Pandya does not have potential, it is difficult to believe that you would have rooted for Jadeja as a AR then. As I said, it is easy to join the bandwagon

If you comparing a Jadeja after 7-8 years of international cricket (that too by focusing on his post 2016 #s) to someone who has just started out, it shows how good Pandya's potential is (and how effective he can be if the potential is nurtured optimally). You answered your own question

Jaddu is a test ATG (that too topmost tier) in SC conditions...that is enough to rate him above some bits and pieces player.

Pandya will barely make a third string Indian XI in SC conditions, overseas he can play occasionally depending on conditions.

Though in white ball cricket, different matter, Jaddu is a fraud while Pandya has a high ceiling.

Jadeja is one of our highest impact Test players ever. Pandya will have to play out of his skin to achieve half as much. Won't happen though as he will never be one of our Top 6 batsmen or one of our Top 4 bowlers in Tests.

Pandya has a huge challenge in terms of his fitness as we have seen in recent past. He is injured and missed lots of months. Unless he improves his fitness to take workload of pace bowler cum batsman, he will continue to find it tough to secure a spot in test team.

Pandya is certainly not good enough to bat in test top 5. His bowling will suffer due to injuries as he will have to drop pace. If he doesn't drops pace his back may find the pace bowling unbearable yet again. So the upside is limited and may infact decline as far as test bowling is concerned.

Spinners do well in India - Jadeja averages 35 abroad (In SENA, it would be even higher):

Jadeja might end up with 3000 test runs and 300 wickets in tests. No way Pandya will get there in test career.

There is no need for him to bat in the top 5. He can bat at 6-7. In subcon, he averages 60+ .... And when he has got a relatively harder ball, he has been quite effective with the ball.

In fact, on rank turners, India can even give its specialist pacers rest by having someone like Pandya open the bowling with a Yadav, who does well in India, and even play  3 spinners.

Looks like he himself wants to focus on LOIs and thinks playing Test cricket will be a "challenge".

First challenge is Fitness of Pandya poses a big challenge for him to survive in test format as pace bowling all rounder  he is still struggling to be available or match fit.

Second challenge is his skills as test match batsman and test match level bowler. He is not upto the mark.

Due to his injuries and lack of skills at test level, he has played just 11 test matches . His test debut was in July 2017. 11 tests in 3.5 years is far too less. Being a pace all rounder he will have less shelf life and he just cannot afford to miss so many matches. He needs to improve his fitness as well as test skills if he has to play enough matches to score 3000 test runs and take 300 test wickets.
