Aus Tour- Test of KLRahul and Shreyas iyer

KL Rahul n Iyer in last one year has made our batting order very strong, they have consistent and impactful both. Both now have their franchise captaincy which surely wud have helped them understanding the game better. But overseas is where the test begins, they both aced last time in NZ when our top order failed. 

Now begins a big test for them Aussie tour 

 

• KL - His career started with Aussie tour, he lost his place in next aussie tour and now comes the 3rd one....hope its redemption . Chances are he might even get his test spot back but he hasnt played red ball cricket for a while now 
• Iyer- if there is a place that will test Iyer its Australia , his hard length issue is knwn to all and his release shot limitation was seen in IPL . Last yr when Aussies came to India he was tested against short stuff against which he was found wanting. This wud be a big test for iyer....if he comes out flying will he will strengthen his case for a long run or else the competition is intense 

 

Lets see how it goes for both, what are your predictions for both

Iyer will do fine in odis. Let’s not forget even Manish Pandey has a odi 100 in Australia.

 

Tests I have my doubts but obviously he isn’t playing but I think he will take over from Rahane eventually. If he is groomed as an IPL captain then there is definitely some big plans for him.

 

Rahul well it’s not because of incompetence. He has done well in patches in Australia before. It’s just his temperament that is going to be the question not his ability.
 

Also needs that luck factor which obviously no one can control. Remember if the luck had gone here or there for Kohli when there were questions raised about him, then the landscape would have looked different  for him as well.

Kl will continue his great form. Hopefully he'll be more attacking in the t20is.

 

Iyer will score one fifty in the odi series but will fail in the T20s. He might fail to clear the boundaries even once throughout the tour

manish pandey is a better player of pace then iyer

Last time it was technical issue for KL, his downfall may have started with lack of faith shown by TM but white ball habbits did have its affect on his technique . Then runs dried, confidence went down the gutter and it was problem every where

Iyer = Pandey/Rahane hybrid at best

 

Nothing about him stands out. Pretty mediocre. Sad indictment of the decline in standards if he is looked up as the next "talent".

 

Rahul is a good player but won't ever scale the heights as too mentally frail.

I have big hopes from Rahul especially if he bats at no 6 in D/N test & no 4 after Kohli departs.  He is good enough player of spin &,  has attacking strokes as well to bat with the tail.  So I expect him to do well on this tour as well in ODI & T20I. 

Iyer is well suited for his ODI game so that should not be much of a issue for him.  Sydney & Canberra the venues of ODIs are not like Brisbane or Perth so he may do well.  Need to give him a long run in ODIs. 

T20 will be a challenge for him.  He has surprisingly done well in this format but his limited game & his release shot exposed him in the IPL.  Samson,  SKY,  Kishan are breathing down his neck there.  So those 3, games are crucial.  Again the venues will be a little respite for him.  Last time whole Indian batting unit struggled to clear the long ropes in Brisbane & extra bounce troubled & we lost the T20..  No games there so there is a chance he may defy the odds again in T20

Rahul isn't going to succeed in tests with his current style of batting.  He plays too square these days.

More than them, it's a test of the team management. Will they continue to be stuck with a top heavy batting formula or show some flexibility in letting younger batsmen to prosper? Kohli or Dhawan hitting some more runs in LOIs will not matter much to India. Mayank, Rahul, Iyer, Gill gaining more confidence will.

 

Both Rahul and Iyer in any case proved themselves on the NZ tour. Were our best batsman in LOIs by some distance. They are unlikely to be picked in tests anytime sooner.
