Neither is bihar industrialized. Yet they have no issue with the laws.

Secondly the msp system is still in place. Farmers are free to sell their wares there. They also get subsidies and rs6000(a figure likely to increase) from the state. What exactly has changed?  Apart from heresay about the future. Some random bogey of some Gujarat to suit the narrative of a businessman primarily into petrochemical  refining? Ambani is based in maharashtra where such laws have been in place for a while.  Yet not made any move into the sector. It is highly unlikely he will make a foray into punjab or haryana.

This border state argument is also a bit bs really. Gujarat whose industralists you like to quote shares a large border with pakistan. It is one of the most industrialised states.

Lastly, the gdsp of punjab is split into 25% agri, 50% services and 25% industry.  India gdp composition is 15% agri 23% industry and 61% services (roughly). There are major differences in the service sector and agri sector in composition.  Not industry.

Bihar has abundance of natural resources which made up bulk of their income.

Farmers never got the MSP. It was mostly well below that.

Farmers are not demanding any preferential treatment for one region or the other.

All they are asking for is one nation one MSP.

Border state BS was given to Punjab to not set up any industry there. Read the history of India and see how many invaders came from Gujrat and how many from Punjab. East India tea company was the only one that did not come from west. Alexander to Mughals all attacked the north not west.

Agreed Punjab has to do a better job because these farmers will lose to Modi. They need to understand elections have consequences and right now Modi can do whatever he wants.

But the main issue is fairness in the system.

A farmer working almost eighty hours a week in the field makes 10000 rs pm and a PSU employee barely working 8 hours a week makes a lot more with lifetime of pension.

Is that fairness?

On June 4, Rakesh Tikait farmer leader was welcoming these laws. This is the most important thing, it's very difficult to support this movement. All these bills were created with consultation of farmer leaders.

The farm census was also used as a metric. This was conducted in 2015-2016.

All i see is proponents of the farm protests coming up with generic simplistic rhetorial arguments. Stuff like without farmers you wont eat etc. Many of them live in highly capitalist soceities where farmers actively participate in futures trading of their commodities.

Only 6% of farmers get msp prices in india. The rest deal with the private sector. States like kerela mostly have cash crops. In my state of maharashtra mango farmers  in konkan would slap any government that tries to enforce any msp for their crop. They have tied up with premier hotels in mumbai and pune. Not some oligarch. They are simply part of the supply chain.

The only thing farmers need to demand is msp being used as a benchmark and guarentees of mandi infra being maintained so as to not losing an option. The government has told them it is happy to give them  that in writing. Beyond this point its just become protesting for the sake of it.

And keep in mind even if the laws are repealed, one reason punjab and haryana could get their wares purchase in rice and wheat was because the procurement system in states like up bihar and mp was poor. Though still poor their share of central governments procurement is steasily rising as more mandi infra increases. There will come a point that despite selling at msp the central gov will not be able to purchse a substantial % of grains from punjab due to also needing to purchase from the above mentioned states. This goes for any bjp or non bjp gov.

So even in the current system farmers will lose out from punjab and haryana. Crop diversification (something punjabs own gov has called for in the past) is the only real solution.

I agree. They will lose and they will lose big.

A comparison between Maharashtra and Punjab is not fair. Maharashtra is almost industrialized to the level of European countries. Maharashtra is an exception not the norm.

In case of Mangoes the MSP by the govt. was punitive.

If I understand sugar lobby in Maharashtra does get MSP.

In the end farmers do need to understand government does not have endless supply of money and negotiate a settlement. They will lose and are wasting time protesting.

The reality is there are multiple underperforming sectors in India. Why pick on the poorest sector of the society?

No bihar does not have an abundance of natural resources.  Most of said resources were with the state carved out of bihar, jharkhand in the year 2000. Difference is that they did not throw a hissy fit over it. Crops in bihar are more at risk from natural disasters be it drought or flooding. I.e it is a much harder place to do agriculture.

I am telling you for punjab msp wont matter as the volume of crops will simply not be procured once the other states mentioned get their mandi infra right. There is only a finite amount in metric tonne the central gov can accumulate.

If you want to delve into history, punjab haryana hp used to be one state. It could have been a very strong state due to bordering delhi. But sikhs pushed for their own state. Also i reiterate Gujarat is a border state which is industrialised.

Himachal pradesh which is another border state has a gdsp composition of 47% industry 40% services abd 13% agriculture. Why is punjab lacking? India was liberalised 30 years ago in 91. Since then certain states through prudent policies have encouraged industry.

In addition, what punjab lacks is service sector jobs for graduates. This has nothing to do with industry. More to do with a lack of human resources planning for which punjab needs to look within.

Your post is also riddled with simplistic ideological positions. A record amount of wheat and rice was procured by the central government from punjab and haryana in 2020. The mandis will continue to exist with msp as a benchmark.

If the farmers feel they are underpaid then they are free to change professions. Most farmers outside sowing and harvest seasons work in industries such as construction to supplement their income. Most farmers in india have branched out into animal husbandry to supplement their income. ultimately any labour market, even in the country you reside is determined by supply and demand. A surgeon will work less hours than a farmer and be paid 10 times as much.

Sugarcane is the curse of maharashtra. I really hope they abolish msp for it. All these farmer suicides you see in maharashtra are farmers in arid regions like marathwada growing sugarcane in regions which dont get enough water. Once the rains fail they commit suicide. Maharashtra is a natural home of pulses. The modi government is pushing for just that. Msp prices for pulses have seen a big push.

Its exactly why i am not in favour of msp systems. Rice should not be growing in Punjab.  Sugercane has no business growing in several parts of maharashtra. Both are water parched regions. Its a poor choice of crop.

The long term solution is to abolish msp and pay farmers say rs 20000 per acre. It will ensure that proper crops are grown in regions which support those crops.

This exactly why i think these protests are meaningless. You already get rs6000 from cg. Why not focus on getting cash in hand to cover your input costs? Ultimately its about getting money. Set up a timetable. Say by 2025 farmers get x amount per acre from the government. State govs can supplement this figure.

Bihar has coal and iron ore. You need nothing else. Throw in Uranium and you have it made.

I know MSP will not matter because government does not have resources to procure it.

Sikhs pushed for their state because they were being marginalised. Let us say person like me from Delhi migrates to Maharashtra and lives their for ten generation and refuses to accept marathi as his language, how will you feel?

We need to avoid the word sikhs etc. in this disussion as it is economic and not religious issue.

Your last point is very naive right along the lines of they can eat cake. These transitions are not easy and strightforward. farmers have to transition but it should be in an orderly fashion.

Just remember farming is not supply and demand anywhere. It subsidized and regulated.

For Maharashtra it is easy to get away from sugarcane as the state is highly industrialized. Not so for Punjab.

Rice is growing in Punjab because that is what government wanted. Now they want to change the rule. Fine and I understand it but they need to show a clear path to transistion and suicide is not one of those.

There is a misconception that punjab farmers are rich. Most of them sell their land and illegally go to west. The money from west sustains the family. Farming is not cutting it.

In the end Punjab farmers need to understand they will lose and have to change with times.

Government can slowly cushion the blow but why farming is the importan question.

Why not go after PSU which cannot even make a rifle for India after 1000's of crore rupees spend.

Atleast farmers have made India independent of imports and not so for PSUs.

You do make good points< I may disagree but these are valid arguements.

People here preaching that thug like ambanis and malya or modi(nirav) will give a level playing field to farmers.  Farmer are protesting the corporate entry by force.  They don't want to deal with thieves and that's it.

Once corporate enters they will squeeze every inch from farmers.

@G_B_ you are wasting your time typing all that information. The same arguments have been put forth in the last 38 pages, but the debate is always getting degenerated to tu tu main main, teri party, BJP bhakti, AmbaniAdani that’s all. And then platitudes come about poor farmers dying in these protests, while some  3.25 lakh farmers have committed suicide since 1990s in the rest of the country with existing agrarian laws. These posters are as stupid as the goons blocking roads and bringing down cell towers.

You can keep all the info to yourself.  Farmers are not idiots.  Just let states decide what they want.  If bills are so good then punjab and haryana will also follow the same path.  And please stop putting insensitive comments towards dead people.

Amrinder himself can implement the guarantees of APMC/MSP as they are state electives. Even the corporate bogeyman you create can be controlled regulated or finally not even given licenses, if Punjab and Haryana states do not want to deal with private companies . THERE IS A AGRICULTURE MINISTRY IN EVERY STATE THAT IMPLEMENTS ITS OWN LAWS TOO. But they want these protests to continue because of the eyeballs it is generating.

Lol. You expect a farmer who earns a meagre 10000 pm to fight with corporate.

You expect him to a hire a lawyer for fighting a case against corporates.

Haryana it's bjp government.  In punjab has amrinder become chief minister for ever.

And you think people are dying to generate attention.

See i think punjabi farmers just need to try to venture into crops outside wheat and rice. Use this as a chance. Just tell modi gov ok fine we accept this laws but in return we want cash in  hand x per acre.

Mostly those who approach them will be people like bigbazzar McDonalds who want a certain supply. My village neat oxer in northern maharashtra the biggest purchasing private player is the surat based Holiday Inn. They focus on surity of supply and quality rather than haggle ovrr price. My village has gone from farming onions to making buffelo milk in a span of 10 years.

Ambani and his kids are fully focused on 5g and jio. Adani is focused on power generation with further focus on renewables. You can read their company statements as a message to shareholders. Those sectors are much more lucrative than farming.

What punjab should aim for is food processing industry which is value added.  Kaur of the akali dal was made cabinet min just for that purpose. The aim was to process the food so you can get a mark up value. When you make the cheese and paneer why not make a frozen pizza which can be eaten all around india? Why not demand from modi gov 5000 crore per year to set up food processing industries which are owned by farmer cooperative movements?

And i dont blame Sikhs for punjab btw. My own state was carved out on linguistic lines. But as with anything there are pros and cons. Thats all.

*FARMER'S AGITATION-:-*

*In a debate on Republic TV yesterday, Sanju Varma of BJP said 70% of the MSP allocation goes to just two states *:-- Punjab and Haryana.*

*To this, Prof. D K Giri retorted, 'but they also contribute 70% of the country's food production'.*

*DO THEY..???*

*Let's find out:*

*Statistics for the year 2017-18 show as follows:*

*WHEAT:-*

*The largest contributor was U.P. (31.98%).*
*(Followed by Punjab #2 (17.9%),*
*M.P. #3 (15.96%), Haryana #4 (11.19%).* *Rajasthan, Bihar and Gujarat follow at #5, 6 and 7 together accounting for 21.09%.*
*This shows that Punjab and Haryana together contributed  28.28% of the total wheat production in 2017-18.*

*RICE (PADDY)*

*The largest contributor was West Bengal, with 13.26% for the same period ('17-18).*
*Followed by Punjab #2 (11.85%), U.P. #3 (11.75%), Andhra #4 (7.24%), Bihar #5 (7.01%), Tamil Nadu #6 (6.45%), Orissa #7 (5.78%), Telengana #8 (5.54%), Assam #9 (4.57%), Ch'garh #10 (4.19%), Haryana #11 (4.0%), M.P. #12 (3.65%). Others 14.71%.*

*Punjab (@#2) and Haryana (@#11) together contributed 15.85% of the country's total rice production.*

*So, the 70% myth gets blown away.*
*And it is not only the uninformed professor, but the general impression among most of us is that Punjab and Haryana are our exclusive food suppliers.*
*During the debate, Shri, Chengal Reddy, a renowned farmer's leader from Andhra said that rice and wheat producers are not the only farmers.!*
*"A POINT TO NOTE".*
*There are fruits and vegetable producers,  producers of chilli and spices, pulses, oil seeds, tubers, rubber, cotton, sugarcane and others.*
*They are farmers, too! Therefore, Punjab farmers cannot hold the country to ransom is the message that Chengal Reddy, as well as the statistics given above, delivers.*

*DISCLAIMER-:*
*I am a Punjabi BUT an Indian first.*

*SO LETS LOOK AT THE ECONOMICS OF THIS FAKE FARMER AGITATION:--*

1. *Punjabi Farmers take away approx, 55% of the Whole Country's Budget on MSP Procurement.* *Country's budget on Food Grain procurement is not an UNLIMITED amount, the Government can procure only as much as it needs for PDS and buffer stock.*
*So Punjab is cashing away 55% of the entire country's budget meant for grain procurement, while only 6% of the country's total farming population lives in Punjab.*
*Thus Income Tax & GST collected by Government from all other States is effectively being taken away by Punjab Farmers only.*
*What about Farmers of those states.???* *Why should the central government not purchase from rest of the 94% Farmers living in the other states.*
*If some 'Annadata' / 'I m with Farmer' wants to say that Govt should increase MSP procurement from other states also, then he is an Idiot because Govt can procure only a limited quantity within its budget as required for PDS, Govt, cannot be expected to procure each and every grain produced in India.*

2. *The fashionable 'I am with farmer'/ 'Annadata' types must also come forward to launch agitation asking Govt, to hugely increase Income Taxes and GST in order to raise money for making UNLIMITED purchases of farmer produce at MSP because you are against the entry of Private Sector into Mandis...*
*So all these Industry Associations of Punjab who very fashionably say I am with Farmer must offer to pay huge increase in Taxes also to fund these fashion statements.*

3. *As a result of Punjabi Farmer getting addicted to Wheat & Paddy cycle, these commodities are in glut.....*
*Lacs of Crores of TaxPayer money goes waste every year because of excessive procurement from Punjabi Farmers which is then left to rot and to be eaten by rats.*
*Not because we don't have godowns, but because Punjabi farmer is addicted to Wheat and Paddy and it producing more and more because he knows that he will force govt to purchase at MSP.*

4. *In doing this excessive production, Punjabi farmer is not only cashing away 55% of entire country's money (about Rs. 75000 Crore) for procurement but also burdening the State Govt with Rs. 10000 Crore of Electricity Subsidy and on top of it the Fertilizer Subsidy of approx. Rs. 40000 Crore AND ON TOP OF IT 90% OF THE STATES GROUND WATER.*
*This is what the 'Annadata' is taking away from us.*
*Be clear about this.*

5. *Such huge cash bounty to Punjabi Farmer has made him most lazy farmer out of the entire country.* *Why does not Punjabi farmer move to Fruits & Vegetable farming.....because it requires Daily Hardwork on the farm, where as Wheat & Paddy require a one time effort at time of sowing and then a couple of visits for Pesticide/ Urea shower and thats it.....do your Zila Parishad/ Mandi Committee politics sitting free for 3 months and your crop will be ready after 4 months for converting into CASH at Captain's Gunpoint.*
*I will explain the Captain's Gunpoint later.*

6. *Also because you have taken away the State resources also (electricity subsidy of Rs. 10000 Crore), the other population of the State and Industry have to pay Rs. 9-Rs. 10 per Unit which is most expensive in the whole country.*
*As a result, the Industry is unable to flourish and become Large Scale or Nationally competitive.*
*How many Industries from this State have become National Players.???*

7. *And also because Punjabi Farmer is able to CASH OFF 55% of the whole country's food procurement budget, the Land Prices in Punjab are the highest in the country.*
*This again makes setting up of new Industry UNVIABLE as land is too expensive.*

8. *No Wonder that Khalistani Sympathizer Justin Trudeau has to bark about the Punjabi Farmer protest because INDIA's taxpayer money is flowing into Canadian Economy Via Punjab Route.*
*After Cashing Off the huge subsidies as listed above, the Punjabi Farmer encashes his land and moves the money to Canada.*
*Every year lacs of Punjabis take away approx. Rs. 30000 Crore through Immigration to foreign countries.*
*Justin Dog Trudeau is making money out of these Punjabis, he has to bark for them.*

9. *All these NRI Punjabis making song and dance about this Fake Farmer Agitation are all WOKES.*
*Living off their comfortable lifestyles in Canada without contributing a single penny to TAXES from which this MSP Purchase or Free Electricity happens, and then talking bullshit about India on their Social Media handles.*

10. *Lastly, I come to Captains Gunpoint....which is really a wonderful feature....*
*So the point is that as per Captain, if the Central Government does not succumb to the ILLEGAL demands of the farmers, then the Punjabi Sikhs will turn to Khalistan ideology.*
*Thats the gun pointing at you, got it.???*

11. *In summary, this Fake Farmer Agitation is all about the LARGE LANDHOLDERS protecting their FREE LUNCH set up over the last 40 years.*

*I SUPPORT A GUARANTEED MSP DEAL FOR SMALL FARMERS WITH LANDHOLDING UPTO 5 ACRE. REST ALL IS A FREE LUNCH PROTECTION PROGRAMME COMING WITH POLITICAL SUPPORT OF THOSE WHO OTHERWISE LOOSE ELECTIONS.*
*IF IT REALLY WAS ABOUT 'ANNADATA' THEN PUNJABI FARMERS SHOULD OFFER TO DECREASE THE 55% SHARE THEY ARE CAPTURING FROM THE NATIONAL BUDGET ON MSP PROCUREMENTIN FAVOUR OF OTHER STATES' FARMERS.*

*SPARE THE 'ANNADATA' TAGLINE.....*
*ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY, HONEY!!*
