Indian batsman closest to Aravinda De Silva

De Silva is revered because of his contribution in making SL a force to reckon with. Before him there were Duleep Mendis and Roy Dias, both world class batsmen but at the tail end of their careers when SL got test status. Sanga and Mahela made two WC finals back to back and win the T20 WC, which are impressive accomplishments. If there had been no Aravinda, they would have got more praise than they currently do. Aravinda enjoys a reverential status because he is a historic figure who was instrumental in SL reaching the next level plus his batting was attractive to watch.

In a time (90s to early 2000s) when Ind used to mostly do well v teams like Pak in WCs (and maybe in a tournament in Toronto), SL (w/ Arvinda & Jayasuriya) used to smash them on many occasions. Below Arvinda in his last phase:

Espn did comparision between kallis and tendulkar when team lost early wickets and Tendulkar significantly average less than Kallis. Does it make Tendulkar lesser batsman than  Kallis. Arvinda was nice player for a weak team who had high point in 1996 that does not make him better batsman than either Javed, Sanga or Mahela.

 

 

You miss the point. SL were minnows, their opposition were always better bowling attack. Infact league ahead. They all knew that game is theirs even if Dsilva tries his best. So Dailva was allways facing better bowling attack and in earlier.

 

He showed his quality in wcup as suddenly he had people like Jayasurya kalu attapattu and ranatunga who could contribute. The pitch where Tendulkar batted with ease and whole indian team got bundled, only dsilva was other bat to do same. One can argue pitch was easier when he was batting, but it can’t be miles easier

You are missing the point, he had no pressure or expectation. He could bat freely, he did very well for those two matches and in some others.He was a nice little player on a bad team.He would never be great player on great teams.

 

Sanga would  be great player even on greatest teams that is the point.Noway he is a better batsman than Sanga .Sanga is truely remarkable player as a batsman alone averaged 66 plus in nearly 90 tests with nearly 50 in almost every country.That is not just great, that is ATG category.

 

Arvinda in any book does not belong in ATG category.

is this chart possible for players who retired +- 2 to 5 years when he was playing? May be All Asian teams?

Among those, Yuvi is the closest match IMO. Destructive batsman, handy spin bowler, big match player who helped us win 2 World cups.

This one may not be exactly right, but it looks close enough (I think some squirrely stuff goes on with the Statsguru tool when you put filters on the years).  Based on this version, the closest comparisons are Ranatunga, Shoaib Malik, Ijaz Ahmed and Yuvraj.
