Well, tbh 99% of Indians have expectations from Cricket and to an extent from Hockey (cos national sport and past glory)..but why are players from other discipline choking ..people hardly know them or have any expectation from them .its like if they get one, its a bonus. Toh ye itna choking kyu ho raha hain .maybe they are just not good enough.

PS not an expert just a layman pov

Think sports like weightlifting, boxing, wrestling are so strength based and/or high paced, short duration, energy sapping that it doesn't leave much room for choking. Let's call this category A.

In sports like shooting, archery, tennis (even cricket) plenty of alone time where the athlete will be contemplating, allowing wavering thoughts, indecisiveness/fear/anxiety basically all types of negative emotions creep in....most chance of choking. Category B

Exactly. Also in shooting archery you have qualifying rounds and bang either you are out ( in shooting if not top 8) or you are ranked 50 in archery qualifiers and you face london or rio olympic team bronze medallist etc in 1/32 qualifying rounds ( and we all raise our voice in union.. ohh what bad luck)

Whereas in Weightlifting you have no rounds. You have 3 chances to pick your best weight in snatch + clean and jerk

In boxing if you are lucky you get a bye in round 1 and enter pre quarters directly and just have to win 2 matches to assure medal ( Lovlina today, Mary Kom in 2012 ,Vijender in 2008).

In wrestling even if you get beaten by the Gama reincarnate in round 1 you have a repechage round where you enter as the loser if Gama enters final bashing all and sundry. ( Sushil 2008, Yogeshwar, Sakshi Malik)

So on balance of probabilities it makes much more sense to invest in CAT A. Issue is politics. Do you know the amount NRAI spends on one single shooter can finance 10 boxers or 10 wrestlers over the year.. NRAI has become very powerful because of the political clout and funds ( Raninder Singh NRAI president is the son of Punjab CM Amrinder Singh). Also its very expensive to learn and continue shooting. So it has become the bastion of upper middle class and rich in north india.. boxers wrestlers weight lifters come from humble background and they need to fight their way up to get a chance.. just see a movie called Mukkebaaz.. its absolutely brilliant. It shows how difficult it is for you to go up and participate in big events if you dont have money or political clout in boxing..

An San beats a Russian to win gold. **** luck for Deepika, even had she peaked don't think she was beating this 20yo beast. Simply not good enough.

1984 started it all for South Korea in Olympics. Huge funding due to 1988 Seoul Games.

also benefited due to soviet led boycott. but still medals are medals. and that increased their confidence.

and from 88 never looked back. we are currently where they were circa 76.

The most amazing thing to note here is that the medallists were all new for every year. No repeat if I am not wrong. Whereas in 2028 LA games we will all sit on sofa with chai pakoras and exclaim ooohhh hard luck Dipika you should have at least hit a 9.. what bad luck you had to face the reigning korean champion in round of 16..never mind we ll wait for 2032… and Atanu Das will say I am proud of my wife..

14-11 .. a couple of unforced errors from Sindhu.. still she looks more comfortable than her opponent so far. Hope she closes out this quickly while she has the momentum
