Why did Indians continue hooking the ball?

Why keep playing the hook?
Four of India's top six got out playing the pull or hook, but their shot selection can't be faulted on an extremely fast and bouncy pitch against South Africa's four-pronged pace attack. If they didn't take the short ball on, they wouldn't have been able to score much at all. South African batter Aiden Markram was even asked at the post-match press conference about India's happy hookers. He said he saw nothing wrong in how they had batted.

"Look, I think on a wicket like this, you're going to end up playing more as a result of bad shots than on other wickets just because of the nature of the bounce," Markram said. "It's a tough shot to play when there's extra bounce. But ultimately, if a team keeps bashing that length in T20 cricket, you as a batter also need to make a play. That's probably the reasons that both teams took the short balls on tonight because if you don't, you're unfortunately not going to score at a rate that's quick enough."

yeah even Rohit mistimed it. That's a signal the shot is not on.

Rohit's dismissal was completely avoidable. Previous ball he lofted him on the front foot over extra covers. Next ball he came down the track. When the ball was short he should have bailed out. He went through with the shot.

Dismissal delivery. Look where he is. By the time ball arrived at him he was already well outside the crease

Yes but normally he adjusts well. This had extra bounce

Having played in Australia since 2007 he should have made adjustment. What is this 'experience' useful for. That is where you use your experience. No disrespect to Ngidi. He was bowling at 132 kph.  His height was supposed to produce steep bounce. This is a given.

Towards the end even Ashwin pulled well. They just had to stay deep inside the crease and make them bowl full which is what SKY did punished them. I still think there were runs on the offer. Some brainless batting let us down

To play hook on the extra bounce, they need to step back and meet the ball at the meat of the bat. In that position, the extra bounce made him connect at the top end of the bat and skied it .

Apart from SKy another guy who were able to reasonably get on top of the bounce of Ashwin. Besides his height , he was almost close to the stumps so close that he could have got hit wicket out.  But that kinda helped him  ride the bounce. All our Indian batsmen should have done that especially top order. Heck even Parthiv patel would have played effortlessly.

Looked more like a pre -match plan to attack Ngidi thinking he is the weak link.. They did not attack Rabada & Parnel (being a leftie) .

And in the process 3 wickets fell within 2 overs of Ngidi.

They still should have sussed the conditions and bounce not go after the bowling from the word go. Ngidi might be a trundler. But he is 6'5". He just has to put the ball in certain areas on a pitch like this. Pitch will do the rest. When you are deep in the crease you give yourself extra bit of time to decide whether to go after the ball or not.

Always love your post.

Hardly anyone here wants to go in details, discussions are mostly generic, almost always ending blaming everything on one or two names. But never the case with you.

Not defending at all but just an observation. Sometimes same happens when players go after a spinner to loose couple of wickets in an over or 2 and match almost goes out of hand.

A team that conservatively started against Netherlands, playing like this on a juicy Perth against SA attack is bewildering.  After first 2 wickets India should have focused on building a partnership. To continue taking risks was a bad idea. India put up a total that was 20 to 30 runs short. If Ngidi was the target, very bad target on this pitch.  India has a weak tail. After SKY nobody is reliable.

yes Rahul played Parnell like he's Akram.  While Lungi is better than him.

Strategically we are becoming a garbage unit. At this point with this team No strategy is better than with half-baked strategies.
