Wasting 15 overs only to see their team scoring only 4 runs more :giggle:. Stat padders of the highest order.

After every collapse their fans defend the duo citing lack of depth in batting while their lower order is very capable. Their slow runs only hurt their own team, they do not have it to compensate it in later overs.

But atleast their middle order rescued them in important match, repaid the faith team put in them. Compare to our batting in last 7-8 years, we used to blame top three playing too many balls whenever middle over failed while in reality they didn't give enough chances to any of the candidates. Rayudu looked best but he was ditched before World Cup.

Makes sense as:

a) if the top order (#1-3) plays slowly (stats padding), many overs including in PP are under utilized. The MO has to play at a very high SR in only a handful of overs to get close to 170, and therefore a lottery where some succeed and some fail

b) If the top order (#1-3) gets out early, MO has to play safely to get to a 170 total. However, because the MO batsmen get to play more balls, their chances of leveraging on death overs improve

Which is why teams like Eng have mastered the LOI format currently where they have 5-7 attacking batsmen. If a couple of them click in a random order, with small contributions from some of the others, the team gets to a good total!
