For positions #4-6, who is the most standout Australian batsman in ODI history?

 

The contenders on top of my head are :

 

Greg Chappell

Dean Jones

MIchael Bevan

Steve Waugh 

Damien Martyn

Andrew Symonds

Mike Hussey

Michael Clarke

Steven Smith

 

For an all time Australian ODI XI, if you pick Ponting at 3 and Watson as makeshift all rounder at 7, then which options fill the #4-6 perfectly?

I would say Bevan, Hussey , Symonds

 

Smith just misses out which feels wrong

 

As great as Jones and Chappell were for their era, the game has moved on too much to compare them I feel.

As great as Jones and Chappell were for their era, the game has moved on too much to compare them I feel.

Jones strike it at better rate than Bevan even though he was a decade behind him in this format. I think Chappell strikes at 75 too.

Definitely like to see Warner at top. Mark Waugh was great himself and gives left right combination if required.

 

Bevan at 6 and Hussey at 7 one would feel is too slow for that batting position?? Maybe put Bevan at 4, Hussey at 6 and drop Watson at 7.

Dean Jones was the best of his era. Hussey was great too. Bevan is great but overrated. Would rather have a high SR striker like Symmo

Gilly (wk)

Watto (Warner's avg got boosted when tracks got flatter, and Watto didn't play as much on those tracks)

Punter

Steven Smith --> not as good in avg as some others, but great clutch player

Dean Jones

Mike Hussey

Andrew Symmo

and 4 bowlers -> Lillee, Warne, McGee, Starc

Also Chappell bowled useful medium pace (wouldn't be needed tbf) and was an ATG slip catcher.

Dean Jones was absolute beast, heard Good things about Greg Chappell too.

From the players whom I watched...Mike Hussey was an absolute champ.

Clarke and Martyn are on same level.

Steve's ODI record is ordinary and while Bevan was a consistent batter..he lacked the impact + consistency which Hussey had.

Bevan had huge impact during his playing days. Won matches from improbable situations. Question should be whether he would be able to make the same impact if he play in this era of ODI cricket?

Most folks are doubting Bevan's ability but consider the era he played in. Here is a one off game played probably on flat wicket but Bevan batting at 4 managed a 185 of just 132 balls and chased down 320 total. A dream inning really.

Bevan was a very good batter, no doubt. It's just that Mr. Cricket's game was more all around across three formats.
At one point of time..Hussey was averaging above 50 in all 3 formats with SR of 50,100 and 150 in Tests, ODI and T20's respectively.
I was in awe of Hussey considering his adaptability from his first series itself, it's a shame that he debuted at the age of 30.

As for pressure games, he has already proven it in World Cups and numerous other crunch chases in bilaterals.
