Are you telling me he never faced newer ball in his 3 seasons? So it is easy to score 275 batting at 5 even when the score is 44/3. Somebody has to bat at 5 right? Why not him. These are all excuses manufactured by BCCI mouthpieces.  If they want to give a run to someone they will keep on giving no matter how much they suck.   He is relatively new to first class as well.  I rather take a guy who can score 200 at 5 rather than a guy who scores 25 at the top. England uses Crawley, Duckett. Not the best players in their side.

When he walked in ball was already 13 overs old.

Second if he was that important to Mumbai team and why didn't he demand Mumbai team that he will bat at number 3 instead of some no name Sachin Yadav.

Same thing applies to Sundar also, if he wants to bat in top order for India, he better bat in top order for his Ranji and Duleep trophy.

Sundar is batting at number 6, you don't become top order batsman at number 6.You don't magically develop ability to handle new ball at international level batting at number 5 and 6.

Viru was never an opener. Neither was Rohit sharma. Tendulkar played mostly at 5 or 6. Irfan pathan despite being a tailender opened at Perth. If you are good enough you will manage. Besides if he bats at 5 unless team is like 4 for 3 he is not going to necessarily have to face new ball.

Viru was an exception, just like Steve Smith . It  does not mean that everyone will become them.Opening one or two matches just like Pathan does not make him an opener or top order batsman.

Steve Smith went back to FC and scored runs there to return as middle order batsman.

Sachin batted at number 4 for Mumbai .

VVS once he was dropped as an opener went back and batted at number3 for Hyd.He then scored all those runs in Ranji and told selectors very clearly he wanted to play only as a middle order batsman.

Sarfraz or Sundar have to do the same, they cannot leave any excuse to drop/consider them .

Sundar is an all rounder for his state/zonal side. So he is not moving anywhere. If at all he comes into side that will be as all rounder. Sarfraz on the other hand just has to continue scoring runs. There is no criteria that a batsman has to bat inside top 4 for getting considered for selection.  These are invented criterias by BCCI's paid bots. Volume of runs is the only criteria always until recently where IPL runs are given weightage.Same mistake was happening during Ganguly's days. They tried to convert Yuvi into a test player somehow. He even opened the innings. Raina didn't cut it. Kaif couldn't break through.  Since we had a strong middle order all new comers were forced to open. DK did for a few matches. He was always a no.5 or no.6 batsman for his state side. Besides Sarfarz was not competing with some elite player. He is competing with already washed up Pujara/Lohli/Rahane. Surya playing Tests ahead of so many domestic performers was a travesty.  First you have to prove that you can produce long innings if needed at some level.

You are completely mixing things up. Why are you mixing what happened at international level to domestic setup.

There is always a criteria when picking middle order for Indian team. Most of the middle order picked for Indian team were top order batsmen for their local teams.

I brought Sundar because some geniuses here think he should bat number 3/4 for team India in test cricket.

DK was mostly batting at 5 for his state side. He never opened for his state. He purely played as a batsman with MSD as keeper. He did open for India. So there is absolutely no such criteria. They don't use and shouldn't use any such filters.  So far there is no such statement from BCCI. It is just one guy making up this theory others just aping on it.

DK was most useless player and you are using him as an example. When was he considered for middle order.

He was made into opener as they dropped Sehwag and it was revolving door for openers then.

Sarfraz had all the chances to eliminate any doubts about his ability to be top order batsman but he did not use it.Rightly or wrongly that is being used against him.

used by who? Nobody other than one opinionated columnist in the name of analysis.  So far they have not even given any reason.

I attribute the series win in Eng 2007 to DK's opening...

there are at least 5 reasons I can think of:

1. his attitude (exacerbated by his father)

2. his physical appearance/fitness

3. his batting position

4. his alleged issues vs pace

5. his background

I agree,DK was semi good in that one series as Indian cricketer.Rest of his career all he did was stink up the joint everywhere he played in any format.

Even with everything he should have been given a run given how much our trimurthis were sucking in the middle everywhere not just overseas.

new ball is easiest time to bat on Indian pitches. There is hardly any swing, and ball is hard and races away. That is why Sehwag and Rohit have adjusted to being good openers in India.

Middle order bat faces spin in spin conditions and reverse swing. Also situation is different every time and has to bat differently.

Its not as easy as some say.

Besides i can't see the difference between batting at 4 and batting 5. It is practically the same.

Patidar is not even fit right now. Rinku has displayed his prowess in finishing in T20.So he needs to be brought in there first.

but rinku was an adept FC batter even before T20 exploits. I can think of others as well who should be ahead of sarfaraz. sundar could have batted at 6, and kishan at 5.

If someone can score big they should be tested out. India lacks big innings players at this point. Nowadays 40 has become some sort of an achievement.

pitches all over the world are too bowling friendly now. need people who can score quick 70s and 80s more than someone who scores 200s and 300s on pattas against 110 kph trundlers
