According to a report filed by the Times of India, it has been learned that Iyer is unlikely to regain full fitness for the continental tournament which is scheduled to take place in August-September. “Iyer recently took an injection for his back pain at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy. His back is still giving him trouble,” a source told.

Missing the final of the ICC World Test Championship against Pat Cummins' Australia, Iyer underwent surgery on his back in London. The Mumbaikar is reportedly undergoing physiotherapy at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The 28-year-old was not named in India's squad for the West Indies tour. Indian have named youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the 16-member squad for the two-Test series against West Indies starting July 12 in Dominica. As per the latest developments, Iyer is also expected to miss the forthcoming edition of the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

If he doesn't make it time by Asia Cup, it will be over for him for this WC. Given with home conditions, he was a monster of a player in middle order, it will be big loss for India. We have SKY who is still trying to establish himself in ODIs starting line up. Again very poor planning from Selectors for last  4 years.

Iyer was setting up pretty well for No.4. Will be missed, particularly in home conditions.

India haven't had a steady No.4 since Yuvraj's days.

In 2015 WC, Rahane was tried and failed.

In 2019 WC, it was musical chairs between KL, Vijay Shankar, Pant and some 20 others including my grandmother

Iyer was fairly consistent at 4.. Bad loss for the team with his injury

Should try jadeja at 4. Lefty in MO plus we can accommodate one more bowler

This.

I have been advocating for this since probably 2016. Jadeja is the not the guy you want to play at 7 these days. He has a limited strokeplay but has a solid setup to anchor an innings or arrest a slide. Incredible how he still hasn't played a single odi in the top 5.
