Watch This Gripping Analysis: Did the Evan Gulbis effect choke India?

Enjoyed watching this. A lot of it was obvious hypothesisable, but it was good to see someone underpin them with numbers.

Three things:

(1) Lack of batting depth resulted in (what was supposed to be temporary) crawl.

(2) Once KLR gets bogged down he is unable to extricate himself from it. He may plan a 5-over crawl, which is ok, but he gets stuck.

(3) India is always defensive as a team in ICC KOs and the Aussies knew it.

You can counter one slow innings from a batsman and still win

you can lose toss and still win

you can counter one odd unhelpful batting first conditions and still win

you can counter one bad day by a bowler and still win

you can counter dew and still win

You can play with one batsman less and still win

but in competitive cricket in a wc final against another equally good team if all the above are against you together in the same match.. it’s impossible to win..

India did not control the controllables. Period. Austrlaia was several notches above in the fielding department both in the semi final and final. They get 20 to 30 runs ahead

just with fielding plus induced pressure due to saves. They know which area y can pull ahead of India. They pulled ahead for sure.

Looks like the pitch eased up and the ball stopped talking much after the PP.

even if that was the assessment by rohit, he should have known that the total of 241 can't be defended with a defensive field on pitch that has eased out. The only way to win was to get wickets. if the options were lose in 40 overs or 30 over with may be a slight chance to win, we should have taken the latter, but India being india decided to lose with dignity rather than give themselves a chance.

if he had attacked & had slips they would have been 5 down around 130ish... 110 odd runs with 5 wkts could have been a place from where we could have put pressure. We just lost it in our minds before we lost it in the field.

India needed Head's wicket to create panic. He was the one who took the game away frm India not Labu. India not having a plan for him continues hurting us in all formats.  Spin early on is a very very viable option.

Like Kimber said, Team India tends to play conservatively in KOs.

We can sit and discuss all we want but the failure has had zero consequences.

Even now Surya Kumar Yadav played it "safe" by not even giving chance to Sundar and Dube in a dead rubber match.

Then, these players are discarded for seniors due to lack of "experience" in knockouts.

The same pattern repeats.

To me it's clear that until captaincy has real consequences, it will always come back to bite us.

SKY should have not been given captaincy. Gaikwad was just fine as captain of a young team.

Similarly, Rohit or Kohli should not just walk in to a ODI side for bilaterals.

Bench strength has to be tested otherwise one player like Gill will hog the opening slot for 10+ years depriving other talent of opportunities to shine.

KL Rahul was prime example, when he failed as opener there was no business in making him middle order batsman. If that's the case same could be done for Gill or whatever next superstar that's designated like they did with SKY in WC.

Thats true, even through it was a little late, a slip would have had him with 110 odd runs more to get. We were just resigned to the fact we will lose.

Sorry for the vent but we deserve it. Humiliated at home. We deserve it for myopic selections. Qe deserve it for choosing experience over players who merit a spot in the team. We deserve this for not choosing lefties barring a jadeja who hasn't been good at batting for a while now in odi.

We also dropped 2 chances of head cause we placed no slips.

We should just not play KOs. What's the point of playing when you don't even field your best side?

Look at this match - 4 slips in place with Kapil Dev trying to win a match with 113 on the board vs NZ in Aus.

We lost by 3 wickets - defending 113 in 50 overs - but the blueprint to attack was there.
