Annu Rani's best outcome would be just to qualify for the final. All these guys have a 1/100 chance at winning a medal, not 1/8. 

I’m with BCCI selector MSK prasad on this one. You can’t apply probability to winning medals at the Olympics, it doesn’t work like that.

Toor's best of 21.77 m is good enough for a medal almost always. In 2020 he would have been 4th position with his best throw... check the throws in previous finals as well...

 

Just randomly checked 2000 Olympics - gold medal throw is 21.29m.

 

2004 gold medal throw 21.16 m

 

2008 gold medal 21.51 m

 

2012 gold medal 21.89 m

 

2016 silver 21.78 m

 

Even after this I am saying 1/8 chances of a medal... what is unreasonable here I am not understanding.

The pressure to perform in the Olympics is always huge even for the elite athletes - which is why most olympic records are far below the world record thresholds and are rarely overcome. 

 

That said, it would be great if what you said comes true - although is very unlikely - almost improbable.

I put failure probability at 88 times out of 100 (7/8 probability). 4 guys who fail 88/100 times, still give you a 42% chance that atleast 1 succeeds.

The other guy is putting failure chance at 99/100.

Australia isn't traditionally a strong hockey team. Only in last decade, they have become a strong side.

Belgium also isn't a traditionally strong hockey side. They have become good only in last decade.

Yes, although they were in top 3-4 teams from late 70s. But became world beaters only in 2004-14 period.

Yes they weren't that feared despite in top 3 in rankings. Germany and Netherlands were tougher sides. Pakistan and Korea used to be in top 5 too in 2000s.
