At his peak, Jayasuriya was unstoppable against almost any type of bowling attack. Revolutionized power play batting in the 90s. A handy spin bowler as well. As an all-round package, he is irresistible. When he is on song, he can win a team a tournament. Even in tests, when India was struggling overseas, he helped SL win a test series in Eng in 1998. He hit a 200 in the one off test at the Oval. An AT 11 is packed with great players so many folks prefer batsmen who can score a quick 50 versus someone who looks to bat deep to get a relatively slow 100 - who would want to keep Viv Richards, ABDV, Klusener, etc., waiting? Can’t rely too much on Statsguru! Edited September 5, 2024 by zen

putrevus Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 (edited) Gilchrist is 100% upgrade over guy like Jayasurya. He could do anything which Jayasurya could do and do it better. Jayasurya is very overrrated . When you have Sachin and Gilchirst as openers you have all bases covered. Edited September 5, 2024 by putrevus
cricspirit Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 I want both Gilchrist and Jayasuriya. Since Gilchrist is literally SMASH no matter where he bats, I will push him down the order. With Gilchrist and ABDV no issues with middle order striking either. Rohit Sharma and Sehwag are missing out. Was tempted to include one of them too. Including Akram as he is probably the best left hand fast bowler available but was tempted to play Lee or Donald. Akram could hold a bat too. Probably can swap either Akram or McGrath with Lee or Donald and wont make a difference. Using Flintoff as the fast bowling all rounder instead of Kapil, Imran or Botham. Do not need a second spinner When you have Jayasuriya, Richards and Sachin. Murali with his controversies also misses out of the entire squad. 9 backups for top order, middle order, wk, spin and fast bowling options. Playing 11 Sanath Jayasuriya Sachin Tendulkar Virat Kohli Viv Richards (Captain) AB De Villiers Adam Gilchrist (WK) Andrew Flintoff Shane Warne Wasim Akram Jasprit Bumrah Glen Mcgrath Backups - Rohit Sharma Viru Sehwag MS Dhoni Andrew Symonds Yuvraj Singh Kapil Dev Saqlain Mushtaq A Donald Brett Lee express bowling 1

Not too many rate him because he is from SL. Has gone into quite retirement and no fanfare remains. Jayasuriya help win a world cup. Started the trend of high tempo cricket upfront. Plus he bowled a lot and probably qualifies as an all rounder with his 300 wickets tally. He was a very good fielder as well. Guy with 10K runs, high strike rate, 300 wickets and WC win is overrated. I do not know what else someone needs to do. Definitely a great ODI player by any standards.

When you have Gilchrist you don't need Jayasurya. It is that simple. Gilchrist has better SR and better avg than Jayasurya plus he is the wicket keeper. Edited September 5, 2024 by putrevus
zen Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 (edited) Talking about Jayasuriya, who can forget knocks (he liked Pakistani bowling attack too) such as below, playing T20s in ODIs in 1990s: ^ that is playing the red ball in ODIs. Edited September 5, 2024 by zen

Why do I take just one of these greats. Gilchrist is a WK and Jayasuriya is a bowler. they have their extra utility.
zen Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 Talking about Gilchrist, one of the issues is that he fails to get going in big tournaments. Based on law of averages, he fires at the end of the tournament to somewhat redeem himself, so credit for that.
