The Aussies were rusty in Perth - they were much better tuned in this test. Khawaja, Smith and Marsh are still old and slow and iffy and they may replace 1 or 2 of them. They have their old duds in the batting dept just like ours.

 

I think the Aussies will get better over the next week or so in Brisbane and Shami will indeed have to perform miracles if he plays.

It's the age old problem with fans. Anyone not currently playing suddenly acquires miracle-man status when the team hits a bump.

People conveniently forget Shami's own episodes of non performance in tests as they do not tend to be played on the endless highlight reels. Most recently his bowling was Harshit Ranaesque when under assault in Edgbaston 2022 defending 378 on the last day and England got there with over an hour to spare.

Siraj was tonked for a 100 runs in 15 overs. Shami and Bumrah went for over 4 rpo. Shardul smashed for nearly 6, Overall a pathetic bowling display. Root smacked a daddy hundred in chase

Yeah a young player having an off day is treated much more harshly because people don't remember that the same thing has happened to the star bowlers they keep hankering for.  It's similar for batsmen. If Pant or Sundar get out for 20-25,drop a catch or have an indifferent spell people it doesn't take long for people to start calling for their removal and whoever is not in the team becomes the no brainer messiah who would clearly do much better.

Pants is well established & he's been a deuce behind the stumps this entire season! Say what you will about his batting but we really can't afford another PP in this squad right now, we simply don't have the same set of bowlers to create that many chances.

So the standard for him is not only does he have to shoulder the batting burden and score in every innings after a top order collapse but he must take every half chance flying by.  I don't recall watching him drop an easy catch - the "misses" were half chances at best. You have to accept the package - Pant is a keeper/batter whose batting is better but he does an adequate job behind the stumps and usually does not drop catches. If there are better options, Jurel has also had the chance and will do so again.

 Is the same yardstick of all round perfection applied to any other player ? Kohli, Rohit etc have been dropping slip catches and scoring nothing. Meanwhile Carey was struggling equally to collect cleanly in this match so maybe it wasn't an easy ground to keep on. Other teams have the likes of Ollie Pope playing as a keeper !

His first job, a wk, is the most important one. That has & will not change; whether the TM also expects him to be Gillchrist+ is up to them, but a wk in the side should ideally be the best wk regardless of his batting!

The perfect player does not exist. We have seen KS Bharath not long ago while Pant was injured. Pant was not even in the side at the start of the last Australian tour when Saha was the first choice keeper and held to be the best keeper in India. The team's fortunes turned around immediately after Saha was replaced by Pant after the 36 all out. 

Here is the best keeper dropping a catch in the day night game from the last tour..does it remind you of any half-chance dropped by Pant in this game in the same conditions ( D/N at Adelaide) ?

Jurel is promising but the sample size to assess him is very small and limited to Indian conditions.

Comparatively he did. Scored more than both RoKo combined and took out Marsh. If he's dropped, drop these two first

I don't know who said that, but Pants keeping was fine outside India; his keeping was in fact better before the injury & definitely better to pacers outside Asia. Saha was a bit overrated, I've seen him drop dollies/miss easy stumpings in the 2016 Eng tour.

I think India also has an issue with the pink ball.

 

Pink ball Australia is too strong especially Starc.

 

Next 3 matches I see being fairly close.

Obviously there will be an impact of such a serious injury but this is his second match outside Asia since his return and as I said I don't think he dropped any sitters. He kept pretty well in Perth and even Carey was struggling to gather the pink ball cleanly at Adelaide.  The fact is there is no perfect keeper and batsman who is flawless in all aspects. Even Gilchrist was mainly in the side for his batting and not his keeping.

There is obviously the possibility to play Jurel as the keeper and Pant as a pure middle order batter. But that can only happen when one or both Kohli or Rohit make way. Plus we haven't really seen Jurel versus test quality attacks as a batsman and keeper in overseas conditions yet so be confident if it will improve the side but it will be a worthwhile gamble.

Yep. If one of the oldies fails, they can always go back to prehistoric evidence to justify keeping them.

The team management should devise a plan to include Jurel,Sarfaraz, Jadeja,Akashdeep, Prasidh in the playing 11.

 

Its too much to expect perfomance from Rahul,Virat and Rohit.

Siraj ,Harshit should be rested.

 

If the same team plays again,we will get same results.

 

Gambhir ' future as coach also would be in line iif this series is lost.

 

Gambhir should make use of form of Reddy by batting him at no 5

Siraj has done a pretty good job and he needs to play. He is the 4th highest wicket taker in the series to date and has 9 wickets@19.7 which is a better average than Cummins and Starc who Australia won't even think about resting. Siraj is younger than them, has bowled fewer overs than them and the matches have been finishing early so he should easily be able to cope with the physical demands.
